>>538310There are several species, depending on where you live. Here in Mississippi they're relatively difficult to mistake for other fungi. Distinguishing characteristics include "fake" gills that end at the top of the stalk, and the stalk is a creamy white color when it is sliced off. They have a fruity smell after they've been picked, but they have a slight peppery/fruity taste when sauteed. They're pretty delicate and don't store very well unless the water has been cooked out of them. It's definitely worth looking into how and where to collect them.
