So I was lucky enough to get an operation to "cure" my Crohn's Disease. Looking to get back into doing lots of outdoors stuff this summer.

I was thinking of joining a scout network and persuing the queens scout award or a similar award. Anyone here have any advice for this sort of thing?

I've also been looking at the air scouts and B-P rover scouts but I'm not too sure. I'm interested in learning to fly but I also want to do outdoor travelling and camping and the like.

Yeah, passing out was an exaggeration but 26 is hot here. Record high temperatures in Wales is 35.2C in 1990. Before that was 33.6C in 1976, so it's quite evident that it doesn't get THAT high here. I don't think it oft gets above 30, except maybe in the height of summer.

Man, 10 degrees is typically considered cold where I live. Quite a few people get rugged up even warmer than that.
But we also have days in excess of 45 degrees that occasionally kill the elderly, so there's that.

45 degrees is unheard of here, though I've been to North Africa, Greece, Florida and Turkey and probably experienced those temperatures there (Definitely did in Turkey). Our winters aren't particularly cold though. -10 is pretty extreme for here.

We honestly have the perfect weather imo, mild winters and warm but not unbearable Summers. We have a few extremes (-12 in 2010/11 and that 2006 heatwave) every now and then but even our extremes are mild compared to other parts of the World. Pretty awesome really, there's nothing more pleasant than a mild British spring day with a cool breeze blowing. The only thing you have to be ok with is the variability of it all. Yeah true. I still love tents and they still have a place in my arsenal, I'm just trying to go as lightweight as I can for a future trip to Scotland. The only bugs I'm worried about are midges tbh, but I have a headnet and long sleeves if it comes to that.

Yep it's a decent defense, but I like to undress more in my tent, in summer at least. Plus things can still crawl in. If it doesn't ruin your experience then great. You can go very light, more power to you.

Sleeping close to a fire should help a bit too. The amount of mosquitos and those mini mosquitoes(sry not native speaker) are insane sometimes. In some countries the bugs that crawl in your gear can be poisonous too.

Good thing the birds singing is louder than the bugs here.

I did my bachelor's degree in statistics. Graduating with a 2:1 (well, that's expected. Don't see why it would change; official results on Thursday).

I'm going into medical statistics (hopefully), it's just difficult to get a foot in the door with a measly BSc. Thinking of doing another job until I can fund an MSc or trying to get a Ph.D as some of those are paid. I'm applying for a badly paid job in London, but it's only for 6 months and it's experience in the field.

I've never slept under a tarp before so I can't really comment on the experience yet. But just sitting innawoods for a couple of hours under a tarp felt completely different to sitting in a tent. Felt much more of a sense of freedom and much closer to nature that you simply don't get with a tent.

So hopefully it works out alright because for the weight and space saving I don't think it can really be beat. We don't have anything poisonous here besides the adder so that's not really a concern. It's more being squeamish having spiders and beetles crawling all over you and the annoyance of midges biting you to death but I guess that's just a case of manning up.

Tarps are awesome. Feel like you're sleeping in nature rather than hiding away from it in a tent.

One thing I've been wanting for a long time is a groundsheet with a bug net and waterproof ends for the bits that live at the extremities of the tarp... I plan to make one soon, I think I have all the material I just need to finalise a plan for it.

Ai, I just want one with some water protection at the foot and head end for that sideways rain. Though if I could find a cheap bath tub bug net I'd get it - chuck me a link pls if you know of one. I currently use the inner of an old one man tent which is heavy and a bit shit.

I should get it a fair way under that - 500g tarp, 400g bivy, say 100g for pegs and guys. Even if you add the walking pole in which I always take anyways) it's only another 250g, or less if you're not a polefag and just take a few sections of regular tent pole at around 100g. Or none of the above if you can find a stick or tree.

So if we average that at 1.1kg that's usually a pretty expensive one man tent territory. Compared to the tent, the tarp has massive amounts of space, is incredibly versatile,and can fit another person under it easily for another 400g if that's your thing. Plus you're doing that sleeping in nature not hiding from it thing which is nice.

A net tent (250g) instead of a bivy and we're in £400 laser comp territory.

But - I will admit that it's not for every trip and if I could only own one camping shelter it'd be a good tent.

I'm looking at a total weight of about 1.1Kg. A 2man tent at that weight would cost a shitload like you said.

I live in Bournemouth and it's not great. The Jurassic coast is pretty good but apart from that it's all mini hills and nothing challenging. Cycling is good here though, the New Forest is excellent. Any other ideas from anons about where to go on the south coast?

Cheaper ai, but still not what I'd call a bargain.

I'm sure such things should be more common and cheap but I suppose they are a bit niche. I almost considered buying that £25 one man aldi tent someone posted here a while back just to see what the inner was like - probably fairly heavy for what it is though.

Best I've found was to use a ridge line under the tarp, though i rarely actually set it up that way. Almost never now I think about it. Only once I can remember.

Fucking about with bivy design. First draft, needs a lot of work but this is it so far.

Black - waterproof 75gsm PU ripstop.
Dark - green goretex from an army bivy unknown gsm, probably about 200 though.
Light green - water resistant ish pertex4 55gsm
Clear - bug mesh 31gsm

Zip to get in and out.

Needs simplifying a bit. Polygons galore because i'm a sketchup amateur. Essentially a bivy bag with a hang-up bug net and pertex where full on waterproofness won't be needed but a little splash protection would be nice.

Yo gents, swissbro here, I'm back from my two week backpacking trip trough Coigach and Assynt, thank you once more for your help. I took around 450 pics and will dump some of them in a separate thread.
Turned out I performed a pub crawl on foot , I stopped at every pub or in that was there, but it took 2-3 days to get to the next one. I had a lovely time and I'm deeply impressed with the beauty of Scotland and the positive people I met in the highlands.

You don't need a course for Scrambling, just start with something easier and work your way up. I tackled Tryfan's North Ridge with a buddy and we didn't have a fucking clue what we were doing. Just picked out a route up each section until we were at the summit. Passed a group of 5 climbers with hard hards and tethered together. The look on their faces that they gave us was priceless as if we shouldn't have been where we were with the gear (or lack thereof) we had.

Other hikers won't tend to give you grief and will ignore you unless they're a cunt. If someone with a bit of authority discovers you, the worst they'll do is tell you to leave.

Like the other anon says, basic grade 1 scrambling is just about getting out there and doing it. If you're likely to be in north wales or the lake district I can recommend a few to you.

Once you're a bit confidant with that sort of stuff then a scrambling course will teach you the next steps which involve basic rope shit.

Yep I got the GF's mums sewing machine ready here and everything. I used it for the first time last weekend putting a waterproof type zip on my hunka xl bivy bag. After half an hour swearing at the fucking thing working out where threads go and how to set it up I was doing ok, all things considered.

Until I sewed 3 layers of the bag together and ripped a fuck-off massive hole in the thing unpicking it. Left it unfinished. Pissed me right off that did, patched up it looks like shit and will need a ton of seam sealer. My blood pressure is rising just thinking about it.

If it were me based on places I've been which isn't exactly a shit load, I'd probably park at seathwaite (there's a farm there that has parking and seems totally chill to leave a car overnight) and head up towards glamara or that area somewhere. I've not actually been up it but looking at it from great gable i was like 'shit yeah there's camping up in that bitch for sure' and all that.

Plus, uncle ray parked there too, and filmed the intro of his lake district episode of whatever that latest series was, on stockley bridge.

Yeah it's all pretty sweet so long as you're quiet and get out of the way a bit, but I quite like the most northern area (the carneddau) as it's still mountainous as fuck, but a little less busy than the big fancy pants areas.

If you fancy somewhere good looking but convenient, you can park at llyn eigiau and take the path / maintenance track that heads north from the car park then round to melynlyn and eventually dulyn if you keep going. It's not suuuuuper quiet on account of the real nice path but you can easily stealth yourself away and it's good looking, and much quieter than the equivalent in the snowdon range or glyders. Bit of cool deadly history in the area too if you can find it.

You can also head south from that car park for a less impressive path, perhaps a little quieter once you get a decent way along it, and some more cool deadly history on the way.

Pic related is somewhere south of that lake. Lots of that kind of shit all over the area.

It's a terra nova voyager 2.2.

I quite like it. Expensive but very well thought out and survived some hard-ass winds on that trip.

GF wants to try the snowdon horseshoe in it's entirety which we'll probably do on our only fully free day. Also gonna dick about more trying to get familiar with the climbing gear. Should be decent few days of relaxation.

Soo... Been working on that bivy thing. Simplified the design a bit so I can actually sew the thing, but it's got all the basics there. Only managed to cut things I didn't want to cut twice and both times it was repairable, even if it pissed me off a bit.

I get the feeling that he goretex from the army bivy is a bit past its best but we'll just have to wait and see. It's all there and looks in good nick, but the inner layer is delaminating in a few places, though it's all held in place when sewn together just fine. I can't find anywhere you can buy such fabrics off the roll, or I'd have done that instead.

The goundsheet does cary on it's just wrapped under my head in that pic. As one can see from the pic, I abandoned fancy angles in favour of straight lines that can be sewn easily. PU ripstop on gorundsheet, army goretext from crotch down and along the sides, pertex up to my face, which will be cut down a bit when i decide where the bug net will go. Hopefully it'll hang nicely but also work just sat on the ground. I'd also like to be able to lie on top of it and have the bug net drape over my face on real nice nights, just using it as a groundsheet and face protector.

Ai, I'm hoping that it's loose enough to have a bit of flow about the less breathy areas when it's flat, and have a nice bit of dead space in the shape of it when it's tied up with a bit of shock cord. Gonna put some peg loops at each end too.

I'm not gonna be breathing into it as such, the face area is gonna get cut down to size so i'll be breathing into a bug net if it's not tied up.

Anyways, near fuckin heatstroke on that motherfucker. WAY too hot. Reached the summit at like 9 and made teh decision to jib the return on crib goch for fear of the by then potentially worrisome wind and darkness (only one head torch between us). Made teh car park by 11 and macdonalds conway by 5 min to 12 (closing time).

BEAUTIFUL DAY OUT THOUGH. Met some excitable old people who looked like they were fixing to bivy up on lliwed and saw some dude scaling a ridiculous looking (to us anyways) ridge up the face of it solo.

I picked up a vango zenith 200 for £90 on ebay. It's essentially the same as the force ten helium, albeit a bit heavier at 2kg...which lets be honest, isn't heavy at all.

I'm doing a masters there next year and had a quick look. There's the Taff Trail which links Cardiff with the Brecon Beacons and there's a regular bus service there. Not sure about many other options unless you spend a few nights out. It can be tough without a car.

I guess I could do a bit of country walking around here but it doesn't seem like there's anything particularly notable or challenging to do. Plus I really would like to get into climbing and caving (despite my fear of heights) but yeah, nothing.

I feel like even if I did get my friends to somehow come along, it would only be because they want to take cool photos and they'd probably bring their iphones and ipads etc. It's a shame because I used to have a friend that was really into /out/ stuff; he had a few guns, he went climbing, camping etc. Unfortunately I haven't talked to him in a long time so I don't know how to reconnect and plus he has a girlfriend now so he's probably too busy for that kind of thing.

Had a go at my first grade 2 scramble yesterday. Idwal staircase, alone. I intended to cary on up seniors ridge but bailed at the top of idwal slabs. Shat myself a bit if I'm honest, and after a sammich on the quartz ledge with the climbers down path on it the wind started to pick up a little and I realised I had completely lost the mindset for it and descended the climbers path, which was a bit iffy in its own right.

Next time I try a grade 2 I want rope, if only for the knowledge that it's there if it's needed. And not alone either, that didn't help at all.

anytime I walk over wet rocks with my boots they slip like a motherfucker, but wearing my cheapo running shoes or canvas vans I've never had a problem.

Any ideas to make the soles grippier for walking over wet rocks? Scoring the flat areas with a knife? Gluing sandpaper on? I'm clueless here.

do what the romans did - rough nails. in your case you'll have to find either very short nails or tacks that have a rough head. you'll probably want to put a dab of epoxy on the sole and then drive the nail in right on top of it. the 'poxy will help to make sure it doesn't fall out. idunno where you can find rough ones though, smooth/polished heads won't be so effective

No I'm no tripfig. It's not a bad idea you just have to make sure of the following things:

1. you don't puncture the sole
2. the nails are short enough so when the sole is compressed you don't puncture the sole/your feet (this includes pressure from jumping!)
3. you make sure they glue in good and strong

also they'll double as tappin' boots!

Wales is a great place to get /out/. I'm 30 minutes outside of Cardiff. You have train services from Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street going up most/all of the valleys including Merthyr Vale, Rhymney Valley (where I live), Ebbw Valley (You'll want to follow this one to get to Brecon), Sirhowy Valley (where I officially live).

The valleys are all semi-rural so there's plenty of opportunity to get /out/, though there is the slight issue that you'll never be amazingly out of the way of houses or farmland, but that doesn't mean you can't find quiet spots.

Aside from the valleys, there are the Brecon Beacons which you can reach via train (Catch the Ebbw Vale train from Cardiff Central, which runs hourly IIRC). You can head to the Forest of Dean by catching the Taunton/Plymouth/Portsmouth train (Every 30 minutes from Cardiff Central) to Severn Tunnel Junction and walk north from there, although there are a handful of stations which are closer to the Forest of Dean than Severn Tunnel Junction, which are probably easiest gotten to from Bristol Parkway, Newport or Bristol Temple Meads (All easy to get to from Cardiff, the first two on the London Paddington train and the latter one on the same trains as Severn Tunnel Junction).

Within Cardiff itself I don't think there are to many places you could go camping. The closest place I know of would be Caerphilly Mountain; you'd want to catch the train to either Lisvane & Thornhill or to Caerphilly; these stations are on either side of the mountain with a tunnel between them. You could go to Caerphilly on the train, catch the bus to Radyr and that's a lovely area (though I've never camped there so don't know what the situation is like there). You could get the train to Aber and walk over Llanbradach mountain, or you could get the train to Ystrad Mynach and go to Penallta Park (which I can see from my bedroom window).

Lots of rambling, because I know the region... But yeah, getting /out/ isn't difficult.

If you don't mind campsites instead (not as fun I know) then I can personally recommend the Cwellyn Arms Campsite right next to Llyn Cwellyn. They allow campfires and the Snowdon Ranger Path is just up the road.

There's also Hole Station Campsite in Devon. Woodland & Campfires! Haven't been yet but I want to one day.

If nothing will deter you from a wild camp, then I guess the New Forest is your best bet. Probably the closest. Can't recommend a spot, however.

It's considered trespassing. If you're being respectful, quiet and you're out of the way (Not right in the paddock between Farmer John's cow fields) then the landowner likely won't care; if they do care, it's respectful to pack up and move on.

Now this bit I'm less sure of, but I'm told that if you are caught camping on someone's land then this is not a criminal issue, it's a civil issue. If the land owner wants you removed, they will need to get bailiffs and issue a court order to have you removed from the property; the police can't get involved as you're not committing a criminal act.

I'm leaning towards Snowdonia since then I can try climbing Snowdon but well, do you guys know how difficult it is? Like is it just a long walk, or am I going to need proper climbing gear and clothes for cold weather etc?

There's perfectly well walked paths so it's not even like navigation is an issue. Put one foot in front of the other until you're at the summit. Sorry but I haven't camped in the New Forest before. I cycle around there a lot and there's not too many places easily accessible from the main roads that would seem viable without local knowledge. They can be pretty tight on it from what I can tell. Your best bet may be to have a look at some OS Maps and find a path to somewhere quiet.

If you just want to drive and look for some quiet spots I'd recommend going on Google Maps and finding a route from the BIC or the O2 (wherever the gig is) towards Winkton/Sopley and taking the road towards Bransgore then Burley. The main A roads won't take you near to as many quiet areas. Good luck.

I've not been to all of it just as much as I could drive to on a 2 week road trip doing 1900 miles total... but places like glascow looked nasty as fuck (not that you'd go there trying to get /out/) and the flatter bits were a bit depressing, the north east end i only saw a little of but reports from a friend comfirm it didn't get any better than what I saw, and the fucking isle of harris was the epitome of grim ex-industry barren no jobs anymore pebbledashed depression. there were dudes in the pub we ate in talking about going down the docks later to see if there was any work, and the wife and daughter of the landlord both had that terrified look of 'daddy gets drunk and kisses with his fists'.

So basically anywhere that looks like it'll be awesome is awesome, but shitty flat ex industry/shipping/mining places are just that (in my experience anyways).

The whole west coast is fucking glorious, and anywhere with mountains too.

Yeah Cairngorms is an area i missed out entirely but would love to go to. Now that i've googled it the north east is defined as, well the bit that comes up when you google it... I was speaking more of the Thurso type peninsula. Not that I got up that far but the towns as far as I got in that direction were starting to look a bit grim and pikey/inbred/dead.

It's all relative though - in order to get up that way I did have to drive through the highlands and west coast which shit on pretty much all areas of the UK.

I spent a fair bit of time with my uni's outdoor society and they'll set out most of the details before you do anything. They'll post the walk distances and a route so you can see if you're comfortable with it. Make sure you've got adequate gear, you don't need to go out and spend shit loads. Just ensure it will hold up e.g. boots are waterproof if it's raining, you've got enough food and drink.

Just go along and see how it is, if it's anything like the society I went to nearly 90 % of people won't have any extensive outdoor experience.

I would also avoid cheap shit like karrimor when it comes to footwear. I've had a few of those and none have lasted or performed well. I suppose for £30 you get what you pay for but do not be fooled into thinking you'll get any more than that. I believe the same goes for other cheap brands like hi-tec but not through personal experience.

I'd look out for something from a reputable brand discounted in a sale if you don't want to spend too much. meindl scarpa etc. then lower down the scale berghaus brasher north ridge salomon etc.

Quiraing on the isle of Skye is a must (pic). No where else like it in the world. The Black Cuillins on Skye are also beautiful. The Highlands around Ullapool are pretty great too. Sullivan is the oldest exposed rock in the world. I climbed Stac Pollaidh, which was a good hike.

Sorry mate been pretty busy. Managed to get some walks in on the Devon/Dorset border. Paths are shit around there if they're off the coast. I tried doing a bit of the Wessex Ridgeway walk and some farmer had just covered it with corn. Might give whoever maintains the path a buzz.

I do mostly road cycling out of Bournemouth, so the New Forest and Purbecks really. It's pretty busy around the towns unless it's a Sunday and the infrastructure isn't great. I'm moving out to Cardiff but will be in a flat for a year doing my masters, so might have to reduce the amount of riding I do. I'll probably pick up a mountain or cross bike once I've finished, won't be coming back to Bournemouth though.

Cool. I'm basing my dislike on a tarp and a couple self inflating roll mats I got from them (their quechua brand) and haven't used their clothes.

Thanks, that's an interesting article. I think a lot of the problem is there are so many paths crossing the same area, that not enough people use one path. On coast and mountain paths it works okay as they're popular. In rural areas they used to be a main route of travel but now they're just recreational. I think more paths should be shut off and one route established than pretending we can save all of them.

I'll send over the coordinates to whoever runs it, as it goes from Devon to Wiltshire so it's a big path. I might have a look on Google Earth to see if the farmer does it every year.

Once you get to the lakes you can get a central lakes dayticket on the bus for £8, or the north west explorer ticket which lets you go a bit further afield for £10.80, though a 7 day megarider is about £13.50 I think.

Guys, I have a newbie questions I want to ask.

So there are public footpaths and trails but you have to stick to them and obviously you can't camp.
Then there is open access land that you can freely walk across, but you're not allowed to camp on it.
Then there are national parks, but for most of them it seems like you need to camp on sites.

So is there anywhere in this annoyingly small country that I can just pitch my tent where I like? Like wild camping? I just don't see any fun in camping if you have to pitch up on a maintained site with loads of other people.

I live in the south west, gloucestershire, just in case someone knows of something near me.

I frequently post about my trips up there. Beautiful part of the country.
Same rules apply camping anywhere: leave no trace etc.
Hunting animals though, you need the permission of the landowner.

It depends where you are. If you're in a rural area you can get away with it, but the government are taking a pretty angry view on knives now. If you get caught carrying twice you get a prison sentence. I wouldn't be too worried if you're in the countryside and it's part of your job, but if not there's a few decent legal EDC knives out there.

Our knife laws aren't that bad. They're draconian enough sounding to please the reactionary retarded townies, and lenient enough that anyone with an actual reason can cary whatever they want.

Think about it, any time you would actually need a knife (or other pointy tool) you are allowed legally to cary it. That's any time you go camping you get to cary a knife no problem. I cary a locking blade every dam day because I'm farmer and it's part of my leatherman which i need all the dam time.

You go to a pub or club you have no business having a fixed blade knife, and rightly so. If you are a black kid in a hoody wandering around a city centre in a gang you have no business having a knife.

If you're out in the countryside going camping or doing anything that would require a fixed blade then you are absolutely fine.

It's also another one of those laws where if you can get caught you're almost certainly breaking it. Who ever gets stopped and searched while camping? If you're in a situation where stop/search is a possibility (wether it be by location or foolish actions) you very probably shouldn't have that knife on you.

But people misunderstand the law and bitch about it on the internet, not understanding that it's more or less the perfect law to keep bitching townie retards happy and keep the scary dark kids and survival madmen in towns knifeless while retaining the right for anyone to cary a blade any time there's an actual reason to do so.

Broadly speaking I agree with you, we should all be able to cary our knives without any bullshit... Only problem is there's people who like to stab people out there, and much much worse than them, the people who read the news articles about the aforementioned stabbers and scream SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT THIS MENACE!!! until they're blue in the face. Then there's the papers and other media who love a bit of that shit and before you know it there's a vicious cycle of knife terror.

So we have a law that lets people carry SAK's and other folders wherever they want (all anyone really needs as an EDC if they're honest) and anyone who actually needs a proper knife just has to actually need it, like myself for work, and myself any time I go camping or woodsing or whatever.

Honestly, aside from wanting (that's the key word here) to take a locker or fixed blade everywhere with you every day, have you ever actually gone somewhere you'll need (another key word) such a knife and not been allowed to do so?

That's the rub i think - it's a valid reason (not that you need one) for a folder or other SAK type thing which is why it's no-questions-asked legal, but a line has to be drawn somewhere I suppose... As folders are not much good for stabbing people I guess that's just where it has to be. Locking vs non locking.

Anyways, how often do you need a locking blade knife in town? Or ever really? I use my knife every day for work and not once have I thought to myself "thank fuck this leatherman blade locks or I'd be fucked".

Went out to Thetford forest park today, it was quite uninteresting. A lot of flat land and pine trees as far as you can see. The forest is man made so you could see the trees were planted in lines which really took away from the experience. I have a couple pictures I took with my phone, they aren't the best quality but you'll get the idea.
