What does "surgical steel" have to do with that? I can put hot and col liquids in a $1 plastic cup from walmart.

If your water bottle isn't made of foam or glass then the only think you should use for hot water is food grade stainless steel.

The benefit of the kleen kanteen is that there is no lining inside the bottle (on certain ones, I believe some may) so It can be used to boil water in safely.
