First Solo Camp

I am getting ready for my first solo camping experience. ever. I am planning on doing some hiking in on a Friday afternoon, camping, hiking all Saturday, camp, and hike out sunday.

I am on LOW budget. Here is my gear I have accrued so far:
>klean kanteen
>pop can stove
>bottle of methanol
>lighter, knife, etc
>cell phone (gps)
>waterproof limefuel battery
>compass
>detailed maps
>MOAB boots
>Hammock
>regular, school style backpack

So, what else should I add to this? I can make just about anything DIY, I can do basic fabrication and advanced woodworking. One thing in particular, is a rain fly. I was thinking maybe a thick, 3 mil garbage bag strung up with paracord, but I am unsure if this would work.

Oh, and it probably is important to know that I am in PA, and am planning on Forbes Forest.

Any recommendations or ideas?

How's the forecast? If you're expecting rain (assuming the hammock lacks a cover), a tarp would be a good idea.

Get a tarp or two, they're super cheap. You just need something to cover yourself and your gear if it rains at night. You'd be surprised how comfortably you can sleep under a tarp while it's raining buckets outside.

I have a tarp, but the backpack struggles to fit my sleeping bag + hammock. I don't even know how I will cram in all my other stuff yet, let alone a tarp.

I suppose I could tie the tarp on the outside

Do you have a stuff sack for the sleeping bag/hammock? I used to strap my sleeping bag (in a stuff sack) to the outside of my backpack and it worked pretty well. If you're going to strap anything to the outside, it should be the hammock and the tarp, since those are things that are intended to be exposed to the elements anyway.

Garbage bag works in a pinch, but they usually don't hold up too well, and it's not something I would want to rely on.

I'll take a couple pictures in a minute. They each have bags, but they dont really compress much. I wonder if I could compress the bag with paracord by tying it like how you spike a shell (pic related)

Ok here is the stuff. The dark green blob is the tarp, I tied it to the smallest size I could. The hammock is the gray bag, and big green is obviously the sleeping bag. The backpack is off to the side, so you can see my issue on size.

OK, here's what you do. line the inside of the sleeping bag bag with a trash bag to make it more waterproof and strap that, the hammock and a tarp to the outside of your bag. That will leave you more room inside the backpack for clothes and a jacket and stuff like that. Also, I would tie the sleeping back, hammock and tarp into one bundle, and compress that as much as you can before you strap it to the backpack. It's probably going to be somewhat awkward to carry, but if that's what you've got, that's what you've got. If you fudge with it some, you should be able to figure out a reasonably secure attachment.

I would use a couple of sturdy straps if you've got them. I've got about a dozen 1.5" bison belts that I've had for like 20 years and I use them to strap anything that needs a strap, but you should be able to find pack straps pretty cheap at any sporting goods store. Use paracord to figure out how to lash the bundle on to the bag.

If you don't have straps or money to buy them, paracord will probably suffice.

Other things I would add.

Some kind of basic first-aid supplies. You're not a total pussy if you cover your booboos to keep them from getting infected.

Sunscreen.

10-20 feet of paracord that ISN'T being used to tie stuff to your pack.

Extra socks. There is just about nothing more orgasmic than a fresh pair of socks when hiking/camping.

Some kind of cheap. lightweight firestarter. Sometimes dry tinder is hard to find, and fire is important to staying warm. If you don't want to spend money, and happen to have some newspapers and old candles sitting around, you can melt wax, roll up a few sheets of newspaper tie string around it every few inches and cut it apart into little paper sushi rolls. Dip those rolls of paper into melted wax, let dry, and you've got a fantastic waterproof firestarter. Best to use cotton or other natural fiber string because it will burn, and you can just light the string like a wick on a candle.

Totally agree, and I do have this already. I have access to free medical surpus (scrubs, scalpuls, alcohol pads, sterile suture, etc).. I have an altoids tin with alcohol pads, a suture kit, bandaids, headache powder, and pure caffeine powder (besides being awesome for a burst of energy via snorting, it also is great for slowing bloodflow to a cut)

One thing I considered but have decided against. While I do get burned easily, it really isn't an issue where I am planning on going

I am bringing a 50ft section. It will be used for lashing certain things, but I will have about 20ft free.

Oh I know. I am going to bring my 87% wool carharts and a stack of clean athletic socks. The wool ones are great for rainy cold nights.

Now this is where I disagree. I don't feel a need for dedicated firestarter when I will have about 8oz of methanol. I will have dry cotton in my bag and in an emergency, the two combined would take a spark from a dead lighter easy.

To each their own. I don't like wasting stove fuel to light campfires. I keep a couple firesticks (wax+sawdust) in my kit just in case. They've been really nice to have when trying to start a fire in the rain or something.

Well the thing about this that I am not really planning on campfires. I'm sure I'll have one at some point, but honestly the only time that I would use my alcohol for it, is in an emergency.

Yup. Totally cool. These are just things that I have in my bag whenever I go /out/. They're not things you need to have if you don't feel like you need them. I'm in Colorado, so when I go to the mountains I'm like 6,000 feet closer to the sun than you are. Sunscreen is important for me. And admittedly I carry a lot of items that I almost never need, but when I do, I'm very happy to have brought them.

Man, i feel sorry for you OP

I have $5,000 in gear and I feel poor because I had to make a few cuts by choosing a few items that were not top of the line. ($800 tent vs. $1400 tent, etc.)

I'm not too far from PA, do you mind if I tag along so I can maybe see how you really do this, maybe take a few pictures?

The usual tea method. Cut it into stars, remove unnessesary parts, cut smaller, froze, thawed, blended, cooked all day long with lemon juice, strained.

I used 16" of peruvian, and have the sludge diluted to around 20oz. This is the same method I have always used, and I am used to the sludge and can drink without puking.
