As people keep saying it's pretty straight forward. If you can read/plot a simple graph in math class, you can use a map and compass.
The one thing to bare in mind though: you'll probably be taught1:24,000 UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator), NOT all countries across the globe use the same system. AND a lot of coordinates are comunicated Internationally using Latitude/Longtitude. DON'T worry about this now, becuase you can, in the first case adapt VERY quickly to a different system if your solid in your own. BUT it would be worth, at some point, looking into Lat/Long, in your own time, cos' that's a little different to a conformal projection.
Other than that, have fun - especially if they make you walk around with an empty rucksack over your head.
