>>543687You sound like you know more than me about the case so don't take this as calling you out. I'm just repeating what I read at the time.
He was stealing from people's huts, often hunting rifles, ammunition and canned food.
He stole someone's rifle and left his previous one behind (probably out of compatible ammunition so it was dead weight), the person reported that to the police and then the police did the camera thing in the area.
If he had used a bow or spear instead of rifles, he might still be free. He was aborigine and obviously had a lot of bushcraft but I guess he skipped the bit about spear hunting, I know some tribes in Victoria that still practice all that stuff, kind of as a weekend cultural school for their kids. Those tribes generally put on shows and have some lessons for tourists at other times too. Anyway...
If he had used a spear in hunting kangaroos instead of shooting them, it would have been way harder to catch him, it might have been harder for him to get food too though. He still did pretty well.
The Australian public did kind of root for him, even though he was a 2x rapist/murderer and a few extra rapes etc. He also shot a cop when they nearly caught him once but that doesn't really bother me. Australian cops are nearly as bad as US ones and they've earned the contempt of a lot of the public.
I used to have a kind of reoccurring dream where I murdered my step-mother when I was a boy and had to go bush, snaring rabbits to survive. It was a good ream, I always woke up happy from that one...
