Big Bend National Park

Hey /out/,

I'm going to go camping to Big Bend National Park in about a week. I'm going with a few inexperienced people and I know it's going to be hot as fuck so I'm thinking about hiking a short trail (Window Trail or maybe Emory Peak Trail, or something else you guys may suggest) and staying only one night.

Can you guys recommend things to see, places to go, trails to hike? Anything to watch out for? This will be my first time in Big Bend.

You gotta cross over to the Mexican side but from what I understand they make themselves fairly visible

they leave them out on the US side I guess, you put money in the can, take a stick. after dark they sneak back over and collect their things and monies

Must see is the Big Bend National Park hot springs. Also, hop the boarder to Boquillas, which is just south of the boarder. It took a financial hit after 9/11, but is now getting back on its feet. There used to be a boat that ferried you across, but I don't know now. I think there's an electronic check point though, where you need to use before crossing now. It may require a passport now.

Try the second you and anyone else on the trail is out of sight.

I've seen peyote in the state of Chihuahua, albeit much more to the south of the border, in the mountains around the city of Camargo. However, due to assholes taking it without the necessary precautions, there is very little of it left in the wild.

You are going to roast OP. Bring light weight long sleeved shirts, a hat with a big brim, a big canteen and sunblock. Water is available throughout the park. The water in your Camelback will need to be changed out a few times a day because it will get hot.

Hike in the mornings (hanging rock) and night. (I assume you are camping in the mountain campground, it is the best) There is a trail you can hike at night from the chisos mountain campground up to a rock out crop and see the brightest stars you will ever see in your life. There are so many, you will have a hard time picking out the constellations. No lie.

Spend the hot ass afternoons in the Santa Elena Canyon under the shade of the only trees in the park. Go rafting on the Rio Grande if there is any water left this type of year. You will find the water is really low in the summer.

The boat that crosses to Mexico is gone. The border is closed in the park. The closest border crossing is in El Paso now.

You do, but it always behooves to ask. The ones I do have I consider good pets. But I'm so fond of them that I can't eat them. I couldn't cut up my two fist sized ones, they are as old I am, and will most likely outlive me.
And as for not being able to recognize them, I'll be staring at the rocks beneath me anyway, because that's what geologists do.

Yes Chihuahua is the go to place for them, have you spotted any of the caespitosa variety? Or are they so overpoached that you're lucky to just spot a Loph W.?

Have you ever seen a peyotero wandering about, peddling their wares?

And has anyone seen Lophs in Big Bend?
