Urban Camping Thread

Any other urban campers out there? Mixing the best of both rural and urban outdoor activities into something fun and surprisingly accessible. I myself have slept on rooftops, in utility tunnels, in derelict buildings, public parks etc. Great fun.

Anyway, stories, photos. Get involved.

In Belgium, Namur, slept in underground parking under the station. In the middle of the night some bums came over cos it was their place(some sort of bunkbeds made of bricks, etc). I totally ignored them, they went away. Police came later, passport check and told me its not a hotel here.

Couldn't you say about any kind of camping or outdoor activity? It is easy to romanticize sleeping in a tent, when we all can go home, sleep in a real bed in a home with climate controlled comfort. If we HAD to live in a tent, it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

personally i'm sick of being dependent on my parents so i'm attracted to living on the road or whatever, surviving by my own wit and figuring it out. experiencing the real world so i can break out of my sheltered perspective

I was looking to do some draining today so I went out into my city, found a likely spot and prececed. About 20m in the entire drain was blocked by a massive spider web and there were atleast 100 large spiders covering the walls.

Turned around and found a different drain.

I lived for three months in some woods near a university. These guys who were students had a tree house there and invited me to set up my tent at their site. Then it turned out that one of them had a girlfriend and never actually slept in the woods so I took his spot in the tree house. They didn't even build it, it had been there for years.

We were far enough away from the school and obscured enough by trees that we could light fires and not get caught. I got pretty good at cooking in a single pot and I don't mean ramen either. I ate a lot of lentils and rice and fresh vegetables.

Another friend gave me his student card when he left town and we sort of looked alike, not that anyone ever looked at that ID photo anyway so I used that to gain access to the university's facilities. Computers, showers, laundry, etc. Also having someplace to poop and not having to dig a latrine was convenient. I bought a bus pass so I could get into the city and get around, with the student discount too which basically cut the cost in half.

Someone tipped off campus security and we spent a few weeks having to be sneaky to get to our site, finding different ways in and out. I left town for three weeks and came back and before I got to the camp I checked my email somewhere and my tree house bro had sent me a message saying "don't go to the camp, we got evicted". That's right, legally they had to serve an eviction notice before they kicked us out so they posted a note and came a few days later and cleared the place out.

Remember that Monty Python skit about the Four Yorkshiremen? Referencing that had been our running gag that entire summer... "tree house? luxury, we used to DREAM of living in a tree house" and "we were EVICTED from our tree house" etc. Then it actually happened, ha.

Why? Waking up to that view would be horrible personally, each to their own i guess. But what is the draw to this? Convenience? I mean if you live in a city/town you wake up to this anyway, your just sleeping outside most likely colder/wetter.

I assume he meant dumpster diving. I'm practically living off the stuff now and I haven't touched a dumpster in months. I live in the sticks and my friend who lives in the city brings us food when she comes out here because she has more than her and her boyfriend can use. There's that much stuff just lying around and we're not even talking about a major city here.

Also in the US and Canada there's stuff like Food Not Bombs in most cities.

The problem isn't a shortage of food, its the question of knowing where to look and having the motivation to stay on top of it.

I think you'd be surprised how docile the majority of homeless people really are. The fact that they're on the streets and not in a prison or a mental hospital should be an indication of something. A lot of them just want to be left alone, and to leave everyone else alone.

Just charity places, like salvation army or catholic organisations. But I preferred day centres for homeless sponsored by the state. In most places they dnt care about papers, just need some ID to register to get your name. Or at least your visa should be in order. But even then nobody cares. I personally met some Americans and one Canadian sleeping in the shelters and using facilities. Sleeping outside is better for privacy and peace though.

Spent the night in a radio tower once, woke up to techs outside working on the tower next to it. There were these metal plates on the floor that we kept stepping on which made clanging sounds. At one point we swear we could hear the guys at the tower next door saying "do you think there's people in there?" We had to stay in there silently for their entire work shift.

A few months prior we threw a renegade (outdoor rave powered by a generator for nonprofit entertainment) at the base of another tower on that hill, we are always looking for new spots to do this sort of thing without being bothered. So we wanted to camp at this tower overnight to see if anyone would drive past, check up on the site etc etc. We are also big fans of urban explorations and just radio communication technologies in general.
We ended up throwing the party later on inside the building and it was pretty fantastic, had fire spinners doing their thing on top of the tower. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it and didn't get any photos.

Im not a bum like people like to reply. I own/payed for my nice home and make decent moneys. I guess people have no idea what its like. I like hammocks and free standing tents most but also like my mummy tents. I take a tent with me but dont always use it. I think people are so used to paying the camping park to stay there. I will be up in a tree and there are people arguing on their cell phones and have no idea Im up there. Not many people look up these days. I have some great spots I have looked at all winter and WILL camp them. Im going to the destroyed side of Detroit in a month or so to rooftop camp on the skyscrapers for a week. Dont be skeert to try it. Whats the worst--a trespassing ticket? Trust me its worth it. Try it and get hooked. OP never stop-not that I think you ever would but just to say it(never stop) and you will stay strong and young and sharp forever. Lansing MI.

I use a Thermarest Neo Air as I like to travel light, but I used to use a cheap $25 self inflating one with no issues they're just a bit bulkier in the pack that's all.
