For day hikes, GoLite makes light packs that are very cheap. However, their hip belts aren't the best, so they are best used for pack weights of 30lbs or under. Otherwise most of the load is on your shoulders.
Source: I thru-hiked the AT with a GoLite with 45lbs pack weight. Shit hurt. Others had similar problems. For heavy weights, Osprey is probably the best. But hose cost $300+. However, I use my GoLite as my daypack with 20lbs regularly and it's great.
