Why do some people insist on camping in hammocks when tents are superior in every way except weight? Are they just too weak to carry an extra pound or do they like being contrarians?

I don't hammock, but:

Warmer (off the ground; sleeping pad inside hammock keeps you wat warmer than pad on ground)

Cooler (if it's hot and buggy where you live, ham mocking with a mosquito net over you & no pad is pretty wonderful)

Comfortable as fuck

Ultralight shit? I guess? Not an ultralight packer so I can't say for sure

If you're somewhere wet but warm (cough cough, NC) setting up a rain fly with tarp and P cord will keep you cool AND dry

Get outta here with ya negativity

Hammock camping is dope but 8 will say that on the west coast at least (oregon) it is super trendy. Not that I'm complaining that I live in a place where camping styles is what concerns people trend wise.

It's not warmer than a tent, being elevated allows air to flow below the hammock, cooling it down. That's why you need an underquilt for Winter hammocking. It's like when you see those "bridge freezes before road" signs, the bridge cools faster because it has airflow above and below it. If the temperature is above 45 I use my hammock, if it's below I'll use a tent.

Tents of equal quality are generally a little lighter. They use them because that's what they find comfy to sleep in I guess. Also, u r a fgt.

No, in cold weather the wind circulating under and around the hammock will result in you freezing your ass off.

Also, you can't run a propane heater in a hammock.

Still, I'd like to have a hammock for goofing around in the summer but unfortunately I don't sleep on my back.

I do sleep on my back, but I don't fall asleep on my back. I always fall asleep laying on my belly. I love the pressure against my chest area when breathing. I've bought a massage table just so I can comfortable sleep with my head pointing down.

if you'd ever slept in a hammock then you'd know that's fucking bullshit

I'm all for hammocks in the right environment, but they are not fucking warmer, they need some serious modification if you want to use them in a cold environment
