I've only been dayhiking/camping on designated campsites so far. However I'd rather go wildcamping.

Do you wildcamp? Did you ever get caught? What happened?

They will have a ranger office that you can call for more info. Here in the states for example, camping is often limited to designated areas, but you can get a backcountry camping permit from the rangers. I'd imagine they have something similar in Europe. It's also nice because then they know where you are in case something bad happens.

I have done some free camping in Denmark, once close to the sea in the middle of a small forest nearby a habituated area. It was the middle of night 1-2 am, pitch black and we got pretty horny with my gf, I think we were pretty loud, I was just eating her /out when a fucking powerful light beam just lit up our tent from theoutside.. its called a wilderness permit, and it's issued by the us forest service, and is managed locally by whatever district you are in. usually rangers and district office are the same facility, although famous national parks can have these facilities separated

there are two main purposes of a wilderness permit,
number one is to limit and control the amount of visitors, and number two is to find you in case you get lost. which is why plotting the areas of wilderness you will visit is required

if the wilderness you are in is *not* a national forest, or national park, or state forest or state park, then you are allowed to do as you wish without the need of any permit to camp.
americans have free range access to all land that is not specifically controlled or owned by any person or agency, which is a large majority of land out west, especially in nevada

I honestly dgaf about permissions or any of that shit. I wont go into privately owned land but state land is fair game imo. I rarely build fires and i always leave no trace.

Depends on the location and the camp tbh. As long as you stay out of protected zones (there's loads of natura2000 all over europe), leave no trace and don't build a fire I let it slip. But the second I suspect you might do something wrong, even if it's just throwing cigarette buds on the ground, I'm either kicking you out or fining you, depending on the situation.

I've done alot of wildcamping all over europe while hiking, and I've found that you can get away with it almost anywhere. Even if you encounter rangers/landowners and explain that you're just staying on night, near the trail, and leaving no trace you'll find a fair number of them to be tolerant.

If you're on your own atleast. 2 or more are always a no-no

What's a good place to be camping in Scotland close to Edinburgh? Or anywhere that isn't the hebrides. I was looking at Loch Lomond but it's all organised and fuck if I want to camp next to some prissy urban folk

Also, the rangers in this area don't really check that well so if you're just silent and leave no trace they don't catch you. I'd just go for it OP. I've never been caught camping altough i've been caught roaming around in the woods after sun is down which is forbidden aswell, but they mostly just ask you to leave

I was hitching once and arrived in Gent at about midnight. Ended up sleeping in a big bush near some railway lines. Was amusing in the morning as the quiet street turned out to be pretty busy with kids going to school and stuff as I emerged like a hobo from the bushes.

So far I've slept /out/ in UK, Belgium and Portugal with no problems. Get in after dark, leave early morning and you will be unlikely to have problems.

Helps if weather is good too as you can just sleep outside with no tent giving away your location. Sleeping bag + goretex bivvy bag lets you sleep almost anywhere with little chance of detection.

Have a look at an OS map online, just pick somewhere and go for it.
Around pitlochry and loch Tay is beautiful. Fairly popular but there are plenty of deserted places is you take a 10minute walk into the woods

I don't know how it is in more densely populated countries like belgium or netherlands but IN the UK don't get caught and you'll be fine. If you do get caught the owner will be fine ( if they're not rich city folks). You getting caught is better than a skinny, lanky /out/doorsman wearing a hammock-cloak combo and with a mora at their belt trying to ask for permission to "b-b- bushcraft camping".

Most parks forbid camping in the majority of their area, but if you ask for permission (sometimes you will have to pay a small fee) they will usually grant it. Perhaps they will send some park rangers to check on you to make sure you're not fucking shit up, but act cool and they will be nice.

Protip for Germany:
As soon as you put up a tent, you're camping ("zelten") which is illegal.
If you don't have a tent, you're just resting ("lagern"), which is legal everywhere.
With a tarp, it's technically legal, but the forester who finds you might think differently.

Protip 2: go to the top of a hill, stay away from any feeders, high stands or deer tracks, and don't erect the tent before it's dark.

Protip 3: Camp at the edge between a forest and a field. If the forester shows up, he'll likely tell you to just move to the field (where he isn't responsible). If the farmer shows up, he'll tell you to get off his field, so you just move into the forest.

Practice leave no trace and be nice.
I spent at least 50-60 nights wild camping and never had someone tell me to leave. The law is there so youths who trash nature can be told to fuck off legally.

In Norway you are free to hike and camp everywhere, even on private ground. You can't pitch a tent closer than 100-200 meters to a building, and you can't stay at the same spot for more than two days.

There are also hundreds of cabins spread around the country owned by the tourist board. Some big ones with room/bed rentals and food serving but most are smaller and unmanned. Some of the unmanned cabins will even have a food storage you can take whatever you need, write it down and they'll send you a bill later. Membership is super cheap, and for an extra $20/year you get your own key that will open all the hundreds of cabins.

I'm planning to do the Hexenstieg in the Harz this summer/autumn and I'd like to wild camp using a small 1p tent.
