camping gear recommendations

alright, /out/. need your help.

going camping for 3 days in a couple of weeks. need a sleeping bag and a headlamp. hoping to not spend a lot of $. any recommendations?

I stay mostly in southern California and would want to venture outwards slowly. so I'm thinking maybe like a 15° bag or something?

also, any other gear you'd recommend I have.

pic is what I have thus far.

socal in the summer? get a superlight bag. I camped in Northern oregon last weekend and didn't even use my bag. Laid on top of it . cheapo 40 degree bag from walmart will do the trick if you dont' have a ton of money at the moment. Headlamp, I always recommend the rayovac "indestructible" ones. Cheap and work great. I got one for 9 bucks. BTW, I have used that pad and hated it. No cushion at all. Got an inflatable and never looked back. But gear-wise, you seem to be doing well.

plan is to find somewhere with a good, decently long trek in so ideally I'd be a bit conscious of weight.

thanks for the feedback. I had an inflatable but my puppy chewed it up along with my old sleeping bag. saw this one for sale locally for like $10 and thought I'd give it a try. might just borrow my friend's inflatable.

It's worth ten bucks, but I think ideally, you'd be using it more for staying warm than padding your butt while sleeping. Guess it depends on how you sleep. I'm a side/stomach sleeper, so these super thin pads do nothing for me. But really, dude, if you just need a bag and pad, go grab some cheap stuff. Your climate is so mild, you'll never need a north face bertha agnes minus a zillion degree double white swan down sleeping bag. I'd add a water filter, a hatchet/knife combo, some other basics.

Protip: IME high dollar headlamps do nothing that a rayovac doesn't. I've said this before, but I have a black diamond that I don't even use any more because my rayovac seems to last longer and I could give a shit if I fuck it up. Also, target is more expensive usually than ANY other store when it comes to camping gear. Dunno why, but that's my experience.

have compressible rain gear, otherwise your fine. a basic waterproof jacket and pants. a small tarp that you can use two walking sticks to hold up. Now you can enjoy the outdoors without being completely rained out.... oh yeah, California is in a multi-year drought. Your good. Just remember the water, beer, and food(preferable in burnable packaging, cans no fun to carry back) Have a fun weekend.

guys I forgot to ask: how much water? I have a 3 liter camelbak bladder plus a couple of 32 ounce water bottles.

For an axe, I have the husqvarna carpenters axe. They're good axes for a fairly low price, not too big either.

As for a knife, I like ESEE. They are expensive, but they have a great warranty (if it breaks, they will replace it no questions asked). If you want a lower cost knife, but still good quality, check out mora knives. They are a favorite to a lot of people.

Go to walmart and buy a fiskars and a coleman camp knife, or some other knife that catches your fancy. If you don't need to baton with a knife (literally no person in the world does) then any knife will do if you can keep it sharp.

INB4 "fiskars is terrible"

The kid's on a budget and I imagine he'd rather get shit than order it online. Walmart has them cheap, and it's sharp as shit out of the box and will do him just fine til he wants to spend 50-100 bucks on a hatchet.

I had a fiskars hatchet before I got my husqvarna.

The fiskars is nice becAuse it is basically indeatructable. Great for when you are a little too deep into the booze.

2 liters a day for low activity, 3 or more high activity. If you are going somewhere, take 2 gallons and you'll be fine. Just some wet naps for cleanup or what have you.
