Short term however you would have a bonanza. I don't watch walking dead so I can't comment on that but there are a lot more people here than deer/moose/elk and I could catch them way easier. Also their my only real concern as far as things that may kill me and they also compete with me for food.

Logically cannibalism is the way to go. The other route is depleting available local resources and then hoping to survive the famine which results from the imbalance of people to means of feeding them.

Remember that without industrial farming we are screwed. If oil ran out tomorrow at least half the wolds human population is going to die from starvation. I will do my best to survive and that means eating you unless you made it to the point where human labor is more valuable than your flesh.

If i'm not living in the mountains innawoods, then I'll go to where my father works. He's a carpenter so he has piles of wood there, we own chickens, ducks, a pony. I grow food there and there are a lot of fruit trees and bushes. He knows many people who own guns and with fortifications it would be a gr8 place to survive post-SHTF. It's on the outskirts of a large village but wouldn't be too hard to defend.

Since I still live with my parents (I'm 18 years old) and I have 2 brothers (20, 22) also living at home, I assume we would form a pack and protect each other. Since I live in Europe we don't have guns.

There is a store 150 meters away from me.
If societal collapse were to happen I'd probably first run to the store with my brothers and with my hatchet to steal food and supplies. I would take the hatchet with me for security while doing so. Most people would probably be doing the same anyway. Get as much as possible.
Then we'd bunker in our house. We have a decent amount of property. Maybe we'd gang up with our neighbours and fence off our streets, although I can imagine most of them will pack their bags and fleed.

I do have a bow, a slingshot and a sling so I'd take those with always. Also, a few knives, my hatchet. I'd probably just do random foraging and hunting all day long to get food supplies for our family. We have a shit ton of wood to burn so that would be safe. We would definitely fence and bunker in our property, which should be too hard since we have a 4 m wide channel around most of it.

Then just wait and see what happens.

I forgot to add that we do have a pellet rifle, and I'll soon buy another. They are completely legal here and easy to get. The strongest pellet rifles are enough to hunt a rabbits, birds and can seriously injure a human if you hit them in the head or some other vital organs.

Guns are much harder to get, though. Don't think my father allow it. he doesn't see the need for it at all, he sees the pellet rifles as dangerous enough.

There is one guy in our village with a shotgun and he's an exception, since he is a registered hunter.

If the classic fall of society scenario came about and we had to revert back to 17th century tech how many people do you think we could feed? My guess is 10-20% of current population. The other 80 ish percent will starve and trying to plan to survive this fall of society without taking into account that there will be hordes of starving desperate people is foolish.

My solution of first thinning our the human population to survive (which is going to happen anyways) makes good sense if you can get past the mu morality or mu tv show argument.

After the population stabilizes you can go about rebuilding and reforming society.

Step 1: Fill all bathtubs, sinks, buckets, bowls and cups with water while the plumbing still works. It's safe to assume that water pressure will remain for the first few days/weeks.

Step 2: Run to the nearest convenience store. The supermarkets will probably be the hardest hit by the rush to grab supplies, so avoid those? Grab all non-perishables, candy bars, energy bars, juices, sodas and sugary things you can. Canned fish/meats and preserved fruits are good. Maybe some jugs of water as well.

Step 3: Fill as many jerry cans as possible with gasoline. Siphon it out of parked cars if necessary.

Step 4: Hunker down in your house. If its zombies, hunker down upstairs, and destroy the staircase behind you. If not, board up your windows.

Step 5. Divide out rations with your group. Establish clear rules and boundaries. Eat all opened food, exposed fruits, etc. before they expire. Drink from your tub/cups before drinking out of sealed drinks.

Step 6: Prepare some supplies inside your car, including food, water, outdoor supplies, fuel, etc. If something happens to your shelter, this will come in handy.

Step 7: Go out to gather more food and supplies when your stash is halfway gone.

I actually plan on a more socially calculated approach. I'll probably channel my inner Mad Max at first, killing stray crazies and bandits for supplies. I'll then find a docile group that seems to be failing, and share the loot with them.
Here's where it gets tricky, because people have variable reactions to strangers, and I could get more than I bargained for. I have to be very aware of the situation at hand, both mine and the group's, so charisma is key.
I take advantage of their hospitality, making friends, pulling information from inside sources, and convincing them that they could live better, but it takes learning to attack rather than defend. I'll offer to teach them, which should stir up some tension, and when the leader tries to put his foot down, I'll manipulate the group and forge trust, making them feel like I'm someone that can fix their problems.
When the seed of doubt is sewn in the leader's dominion and his policy of pacifism is looked down on, I jump in and fill the power vacuum with promises of better lives in learning to fight for control.
I have a backup in case I fail, but human behavior is usually pretty predictable in high-stress situations. For the sake of length, I'll overlook the possibility that it could go wrong.
Now I have a team to work with, and using personal experience in surviving against actual people,

I can train them to be more efficient, to practice teamwork, to conserve supplies, and to cope with losing other group members.
From there I rebuild a new society, taking on/taking in other groups, gaining ground, and staving off attacks from whatever enemies we face.
Eventually I won't play soldier anymore. After leading for a fair amount of time and establishing a chain of command, I'll retire in a position of authority to maintain my image. Society will run itself, and thrive.

I think I'd be OK if shit went down. I live in east central Alberta. I have a large plot of forest land (a full section) off the beaten path. I've built a cabin and a large greenhouse both solar/wind/generator powered and geothermally heated (-40 outside, +18C 68F inside). I've studied and nearly mastered conventional and hydroponic gardening. Plus I've been hunting since 2 years old (obviously started in ride alongs with dad). Plus for fun I've been learning machining, and I'm working on building a Dake square steam piston engine powered truck. What do you guys think?

It depends what kind of collapse we're talking about. If I expect things to be out for less than a year, I'll head for the Ouachita Mountains (I live in Arkansas). I'm familiar with that territory but I can't expect to have available game in the South for more than a year. Long term, I'll head to Wyoming. Less population density there, so more resources for everybody. I have skills to trade, so hopefully I can hook up with some other mountain folk and work something out.

Keep in mind it will likely be families of starving city dwellers wandering out into the country to try and live off the land once their cupboards run dry. And you only really need to hunt people until the ones without the ability to survive starve, so say 6 months to a year tops. Then it's reform an agrarian society and start rebuilding.

you shouldnt assume that, you should make a list prioritizing the local stores based on items you currently need the most, type of disaster, distance, safetg, and lastly likelyhood that the store will have been mobbed

you should start with things that arent easily manufactured.

medicine, perscriptions first, multivitamins second, then everything else whether you need it or not. Remember vets carry antibiotics

potable water, if you dont have a pool and plenty of chlorine or easy access to a lake/stream/river that outists arent shitting in then you need to bug out to somewhere that does, but in the meantime you need as many sealable containers capable of holding and transporting water as possible, also filters and tabs

seeds, planting supplies, fertilizer, pesticides.

tobacco products

Economic shit is hard in the city and even harder on the poor like myself and family.

Most are pretty mild and easy to recover from in my area. The few worst cases for our area aren't bad enough to collapse society even temporally. It is sort of like maybe the power is out for a week max, or water is fucked up from mains breaking, or can't really travel due to roads not being clear (blizzard, flooding). For all of them there is enough warning to stock up proper supplies and wait it out at home.

The only reason I could think to justify bugging out is crazy shit like nukes or chem disaster that causes a forced evac. Everything else that could realistically happen around here, it is better to stock up and stay home.

Human liver apparently has a high enough vitamin and metabolic byproduct content to be essentially poisonous. I'm not sure if this would change once people start eating less meat, processed crap and drinking less alcohol. Either way, be cautious.

Consuming the brain is also a big no-no. It carries a high risk of contracting a type of pathogen called a prion which infects nervous tissue, causing massive degeneration, dementia and eventually death. Think mad cow disease. It's also completely incurable and guaranteed death once infected.
For safety's sake even avoid handling brain matter when possible, prions are resistant to virtually all forms decontamination; soaps, detergents, acids, radiation, heat, etc all have no effect. The prion that causes scrapie in sheep can remain active in soil for decades, for example.

The woods out there are wild too. I live in western MA, we are pretty damn rural. But nothing compared to the woods that the AT traverses in new england. You can very easily hide there and find remote areas despite how "heavily traveled" the trail is. The only problem would be the winters, it would be more populated and dangerous the further south from MA we go.

Springfield area. Vermont is about a 40 minute drive from me. Anywhere in MA is pretty good to hide in the woods honestly so long as you can get north and have the ability to survive the winters. Even greenfield has some very dense and wild forests. Ever hiked greylock? You can see just how awesome the woods are from there.

I once hiked the long trail in vermont, a friend and I climbed a fire tower somewhere near the town of stratton. The tower was at least 7 stories high, all you could see in every direction was dense woodland. Some of the woods we passed through were unlike anything I've ever seen, beautiful forest land very undisturbed by humans. I imagine living out there in the temperate months with proper equipment would be quite fun actually.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned old people? I'm not sure about internationally, but here there are a lot of areas that predominantly old folks. I live in one of those areas, almost everyone I see around here is 70+.

Most are too weak to defend themselves, to deaf to hear you coming and have homes full of medication, tinned food, books, candles, blankets, batteries, tobacco and other items that aren't iPads. Old people tend to stockpile everything due to not being able to just go to the store whenever they feel like it.

Ideally, me and my housemate would kill every person in my street (about 50 homes in total, 95% old people) and try to set up paths for moving from one side of the street to the other, undetected and quickly. My main concern would be gangs of people coming to kill, rape and rob us, so I would try and set up an underground tunnel system over time in an attempt to make ourselves undetectable.

I would mutilate the bodies of my neighbours to extremes and place them outside their homes, using blood to write messages in the roads to act as a deterrent.

I would spend my days in my underground cave crafting weapons, reading and playing cards and anything else I could do to stay sane. I would set traps in hopes of catching people so I can use their supplies, gather information and possibly enslave them. In my mind I would dig a huge hole, cover it and place a backpack or other such 'bait' near it. Laying a few of the traps would hopefully give me enough supplies to stay alive.

The first few weeks would be essential, as long as I didn't get petrol bombed on while digging a hole, I think this idea would carry me until the population is so low no one is supplying me with food anymore. At that point it's going to be a lot safer to explore outside.

I do have a few concerns with this plan, my biggest being where the fuck do I put the dirt from all my digging? Obviously if I'm digging a secret underground fortress, leaving a huge pile of dirt isn't ideal.

Aside from physical consequences, regardless of how much of an edgy fuck anyone considers themselves to be now, it'll mess you up mentally, and that's the last thing anyone needs when dealing with whatever elements of cause and effect are present with everything else.

Best advice is to have a community plan. When something happens you and all your community meet at a designated area(s), drills to practice what to do, overlapping job knowledge, and so on. Essential stuff any community really needs to know in case of disasters.

Most important things are maintaining food rations, protecting food, protecting each other, staying together, knowing who to turn away from the community when people are migrating, and knowing how many people you can support at any time. Clear leadership and proper person-to-job relegation is a must.

I'm a realist so I'm not planning for a zombie invasion or anything, what would REALISTICALLY happen that I'm planning for is simply a collapse of law and order, that could be caused by a myriad of things.

That being said, and knowing the likely scenario that would occur my buddy and I, (both military, I'm a Marine, he's a soldier) have selected a location deep within blm land that has water nearby, and is very remote and difficult to access. The most dangerous time will be actually getting out of town, and for that I have a scar 17, and he has a ptr 91. We're not gonna waste time and resources and risk getting killed raiding grocery stores and stuff so we're already stocked with what we need. Also, he and I are fairly talented at bushcraft and can live off the land where were going so nbd there. We would spend several months at our spot while all the city folk kill themselves off and starve and all that other fun stuff and then he and I would start building our own more permanent camp. I'm a construction equipment mechanic, and know how to rig alternators up to charge battery banks and set up an electrical grid, so I'd set up a source of renewable energy with alternators and Daisy changed deep cycle batteries with an ac inverter, and from there we secure our camp whilst looking for other survivors to work with us. He and I being military we would obviously not fuck around with people,and only offer sanctuary after they've proven they could be trusted. While I continue improving our camp I'd also train people I can trust and we'd set about stabilizing the area, and enforcing a reasonable system of law and order. We would follow the constitution in our little government as much as possible, and those around us who refuse to abide by the constitution would be killed.

At first there will need to be a strong leader that takes care of the present, with eyes on the future. Security would be huge, but so would crafty shit, plantlife, and music. Moral is something you cannot lose. I would eventually set up an ampetheater for events.

You have to find the right mix between iron fist and benevolence, which is hard to do.

I live in a village in rural Scotland. We've got a community of families that've been here for generations, that grew up together and they mostly all still live here.
I think we could work something out with fishing, stockpiling, farming, some families here have chickens we could breed etc.
The 4 biggest issues imo would be old people, seeing as mabye half of the population here are elderly couples living out the rest of their days in a quiet place. They're lovely people but a lot are getting to the stage where they rely on medicine or can hardly move around. Those without family will be taken advantage of or perhaps forgotten if the church isn't useless they'd probably try to take care of them.
Medicine for shit like diabetes etc will end up with people making poor decisions because their kid/them are gonna die.
Dealing with pets like dogs. Depending on the food situation some or most will have to die and again would force some poor decisions for people who really love their pets.
Religion would be important. I imagine the amount of people dedicated to it would skyrocket and bind people together. People can end up doing "edgy" shit like what was discussed above, rape,slavery and cannibalism. But these acts would really mess up a person's head - well more the cannibalism - I understand people's morals would be more loose and people say they'd do this and that. But actions speak louder than words.
Doing this shit also isolates you from anyone else who isn't a victim if they have any idea of what you're doing.
Call me naive but I have faith in us. Its not going to be a fictional world where we all become monsters.

I raise livestock, small stuff, that beef in the pasture aint good for much if you can't keep the meat preserved, goats and smaller is best.

I garden

I have 3 lakes within a mile of my house two creeks on my property, and at current count 6 springs

I have guns

I have ammo

I have canning equipment

I have a fishing pool that hasn't had chemicals in it for years (can stock it with fish as a holding tank until I'm ready)

I hunt

I trap

I fish

I can fashion almost anything by hand

I have horses that don't need gas

I have no neighbors to loot from me

I have several areas scoped out already in the case that I may need to leave

I have roughly 2 tons of grain on hand for the livestock (works good food if your hungry)

I have entirely to much wet dog food that actually smells like decent food because I bought it in bulk (see above for relevance)

I have ~300lbs of salt

I have a wood heated home

I have 15+ years worth of wood

I make my own alcohol

I have a shit ton of farm buildings around me that are only used for storage and such, but have no people near them (if S does HTF, whatever I can take will be mine, i'm not worried about property rights)

I have seeds stockpiled

I have 250 gallons of fuel

I have a livestock trailer with the front half turned into a minicamper type deal so I can load up what I have and move it withing reason
I am pretty well set, the only thing I don't really have something figured for is I have a lot of family about 30 minuets north of me, and I am unsure of how I would be able accommodate them, and I sure as fuck can't just turn them away.

I'm in Indiana, so if shit really goes south, I can always pack up as much as I can and head north to Canada.

All that said, im not really a preper, I just like doing things myself, and as a result i am pretty well off in the prepping area.

im kinda good at making anything i want so i would probably keep about 15 grenades on me at all times. i would fin some old ass boat car, find a turbo diesel and put it in it. armor it out. put a few dozen rockets on it. get a trailer make it a mobile base and armor it the fuck out. then kinda just live it up. im protected from cannibals cause i got nades and missiles. which arent hard to make either. ammo is everywhere... so are guns cause ill just blow people up and take thier shit if they fuck with me. i can make indoor gardens.. generators.. homes. welding machines(already got one but more is good).. forges smelters.... i would go pull up a bunch of rails to have metal to melt down for more armor cause rails are everywhere. if the apoc happened the world would literally be my oyster and i would pretty much let anyone come stay at my crib if they werent pricks and could fight or learn properly.

I have access to a remote "campsite" in the foothills. The camp is in a cattle ranch. Lots of cattle, lots of game, fishing.

I'd pack my ammo, a few guns, and the freezer full of food.

The place has solar panels, a fridge/freezer and a stove. I could live there for at least a year.

There's a trail behind my house that leads through the city and eventually out to the countryside. I'll grab my bug out bag and ride my rigid 90's MTB out to where my grandfather has 100 acres of conservation ground including a large creek and plenty of timber.

It sucks to think about, but 80%+ of the population is fucked. But for those of us who are rural, the hardship doesn't really start till winter. Assuming that they can supply food, they will be fine, comparatively.

SHTF
Recall. Everyone gets a text and a call. Any one not home in half an hour goes straight to the first RV and waits.
From there it depends on the threat.
Civil unrest we go bush.
Disaster and we go for high country farmland.
Big fire we head for the city.
Milatary threat will send us bush and keeping a low signature
Biological threat and we use the court five foot yacht to go down river and off shore.

To all those who think eating people is a good survival strategy. You are wrong. There are several medical conditions that are caymysed by eating human flesh. All are fatal. Look it up if you don't believe me.

The way I figure it, any kind of collapse or destabilization will be temporary. Even if the old power structures are totally removed, new ones will soon form. Humans are naturally inclined towards a structured society. There's no way we'd be looking at anything more than 5 years or so of actual every man for himself type chaos, probably significantly less. What kinds of powers will start to rise from that, there's no telling. You can't really plan that far ahead, because the future could take many forms.

So, at first I suppose I mostly try to get out of the way while the fires (figurative and literal) burn themselves out. I've got a handful of top-shelf firearms and and pretty proficient, I've got a good off road motorcycle, a 4x4, a bicycle, some good outdoors equipment, a good collection of useful literature, etc etc. The big decisions for me would be where to go, and who to bring with. I would probably want a group of at least 4 people, but no more than 8-10. As for where to go, again it depends on the situation. If I have enough advance warning, or travel is possible without totally unreasonable danger, I would probably try to make it to my parents house up in the Rockies.

They've got a good off grid setup going with greenhouses that could be scaled up, solar power, a good well, etc. They're fairly off the beaten path, but if large numbers of people start to flee the cities for the more remote parts of America they would still probably get a little more traffic than I would be comfortable with, so I might head deeper into the mountains. Of course, I don't want to be totally out of touch with whats going on, so I wouldn't want to get way, way too isolated. Once things start to settle down, the time will be ripest to get in on the reconstruction and carve out a better life in the opportunity left in the wake.

That's my plan, at least.

Just bought another 10 days worth of sealed food for me and my wife. That, in addition to the stuff we already have and then any flour, rice, canned goods, etc we happen to have when SHTF, I think we'd be able to bug-in for at least three weeks before having to venture out or ration our food. I'll admit we need to store more water since we are not on a well.
I guess whether or not we bug-in or -out depends on the situation. Luckly, we do live on the outskirts of the suburbs so evac isn't that much of a problem with all the backroads, plus I can always sneak out at night and plink the rabbits that infest the soccer field north of us if we need meat.

I live 30 miles away from Burlington and go there regularly enough that I would have heard about them running on only solar power. I'm not calling you a lair but I just don't think that you heard the truth. When you think of Burlington many people think "hippies" but it is much more suiting to think "hipsters" it is easy enough for them to say they care about the environment but if it requires them to work for it or sacrifice any amount of comfort for it they don't do it.
