Have you ever used a tarp as an overnight shelter in the woods? Particularly in deep woods.

I want to do it to reduce my pack weight over a tent but holy shit

IMHO that no one asked for; don't use it unless it is raining/going to rain. Sleeping under the stars is awesome. The feeling of waking up and looking up at the stars at night is great. I've slept in bear country with out any shelter. It was great. If you're scared of predators, get mace, keep a fire going, and/or a gun.

christ save you, just get a cheap colemans mosquito net, less than 10 bucks you, your "tent", and an extra 5 square feet will be mosquito proof. Can't say the same for no-see-ums-but-ouch-$#%#$-its

Sleeping under a tarp or even without any shelter is awesome if you know the weather is going to be clear but for piece of mind and protection from the elements and bugs etc, there is simply nothing better than a tent. There are reliable tents out there that weigh under 2kg, pack down small and are relatively cheap but of course if you spend big $$$ you can get tents that weigh around the 1kg mark. A popular tarp is the DD 3X3 which weighs in at over 800g with lines and pegs...my 2 man tent weighs 2kg but I feel the extra weight is worth the added protection a tent gives you. Plus, my tent opens up on both sides so I can sleep with them both open if I want to feel more like i'm sleeping "outdoors" kind of thing, especially on hot summer nights. If the rain and/or high winds appear I can zip it up and rest easy knowing I will stay perfectly dry and warm.

You have to consider how you will pitch your tarp too. If there's no trees to tie off to then you have to carry hiking poles to use as a support structure and now you may be encroaching into affordable tent weight territory (depending on your tarp of choice). If you do pitch a tarp like pic related for instance, there's no groundsheet which would be a royal pain in the arse if you're pitching in the wet or on wet ground. You could carry a piece of tyek or small groundsheet for this eventuality of course but now everything has got overcomplicated when compared to the simplicity of a small, single pole tent.

I enjoy tarp camping, especially in the summer. But when i've been out doing a lot of walking and I want to have an assured good nights rest, i'll choose a tent every time.

I've been woken up more than once by bugs trying to crawl into my ear or nose. No more floor-less tents or tarps for me. I have an MSR "Missing Link" tent that is about 3 pounds, uses my hiking poles to set up. Worth every ounce.

Buy a 6 moon designs lunar solo or a tarptent protrail. both are under $250. pay extra for the seam seal on the 6 moons as the material is difficult to seal yourself.

or you could just buy a mosquito net and stop being a pansy

Depending on tarp size there are fuck tons of configurations that don't leave 3 sides exposed.
Besides, aren't you camping to get closer to nature anyway?

Net is light, cheap, and easy to use. And there is insect repellent, also again you are outside, you need to learn to deal with a few bugs or only camp when it is cold.

Proper set up and location picking minimizes this a large about. And there are many ways to deal with it as well.
Watch some vids on low temperature tarp camping for ideas.

The tent really does not stop such a unlikely event ether.

Nope. They have legs and wings, and can crawl across rope. I can't sleep in a hammock, and a lot of our trees are shitty lodgepole pines, lots of standing dead with questionable root structures. They are subject to massive blowdowns. Entire campgrounds can be closed because of hazardous tree situations. Pic related, on this occasion I camped in an area not subject to trees falling on me.

Not when your high enough elevation wise. When I camped the boundary waters and Wisconsin, bugs were out in force. Fire, bug spray, and I've heard theory about peppermint. Even then, bugs sometimes bit through the smoke and spray. South Carolina wasn't too bad in April. I was pretty bushed every night, but was more worried about snakes.
