>>548925>opinions and tipsThe reason I go to the Black Rock is to camp out on the edges (camping on the playa surface is nuts) in utter silence, then be awakened in the middle of the night by a freight train rolling through. The contrast is really great, something I haven't experienced anywhere else. Lying on the ground you can feel them coming a couple miles away. It alters your dreams in an interesting way.
The idea of spending that much money to camp out in the middle of the playa with a bunch of dirty hipsters is, well, kind of crazy. It's completely the opposite of why I go /out/. Sometimes I am tempted, just to be able to say
> been there, done thatbut my time off is precious, and I tend to want to be alone. The Black Rock is less than a day's drive from me, and it's a great place to find solitude.
The main thing to remember is pic related. The playa can be fun to drive on, but if it's the least bit wet, if you can't recognize the signs, you are going to be hopelessly stuck. And a tow out (when it's dry enough for the tow truck) costs a fortune.
