hey sc/out/s, what are your thoughts on using aluminium gear for camping?

I've heard people on here claim it causes Alzheimer's, but looking at articles online the scientists claiming this seemed more concerned with aluminium in food, water and antiperspirants than they did with cookware.

Is there anything else I should know? They're drastically cheaper than stainless steel and titanium so I was strongly considering getting them for basic boiling over the fire and cooking meals.

it's pretty much perfect. especially if you have a lot to carry as it weighs less than steel and costs about 1/3 as much, give or take.

I've found that steel is very inexpensive as well. there is a tall pot by stanley that is popular on /out/, and MSR makes some very well priced steel cookware too.

Honestly the only thing I have that's aluminium is a cup. Most of my food I have is just boil in the bag and I use a jetboil for that. Use the left over water for a couple brews.

Aluminum is fine, as long as you're not subjecting it to really acidic substances, it's not going to leech anything. So basically follow this rule: Don't rub tomatoes all over your aluminum.

Aluminum is well known to be a nuerotoxin, and small amounts of metals leach into the food we cook on these metals. Cooking on an iron skillet can actually provide dietary iron. What's the RDI for neuro toxic aluminum? Whether or not there is an Alzheimer's link (still disputed), I'd be cautious to use it when steel and titanium are available for roughly the same price. If you insist on using it for some reason, at least opt for anodized aluminum.

I once had am aluminum Dutch oven that my brother melted because he thought it was cast iron or some shit and way overloaded it.
I miss it. It was nice not having to lug around 60lbs of cast iron whenever I wanted to cook in a Dutch oven.

It's fine as long as you don't cook anything acidic like tomato sauce for extended periods of time, if you don't scour the insides you'll probably end up with some oxide to further prevent off taste.

If it's just for boiling and quick cooking like you said it should be fine. Besides, aluminium sucks for simmering stuff in so it's not as if you'll really lose much in terms of stews.

The alzheimers is left over scare from the 80's & early 90's. No evidence is there, and even if it's a worry cookware is not the source of concern. Unless you want to store something very acidic in it long term then consume it. So, not a concern at all for outdoor gear.

tl;dr it's cheap, light weight, very durable; basically perfect. Use it without any worries.

I can get food grade aluminum of equal or greater volume, equal or maybe less weight, for less than 1/10th of the price for your primo snow peak gear.
