I bring a dedicated pillow, because I have no spare clothes save for socks and clean sleeping clothes. jackets and insulation might need to be worn to bed if the weather turns foul, so I can't count of having anything to improvise a pillow out of.
I can recommend the exped UL pillows. they weigh about 1 oz, pack down to the size of a box of matches, and is comfortable for a side sleeper. if you don't wear a hat/buff to sleep, wrap the pillow in your towel or something for comfort.
