Backpacks: I need a new one that's good for Urban/Office EDC, but can also do weekend trips to the mountains and the beach because I have a motorcycle.

I've narrowed it down to Goruck GR0 and TAD Fast Pack Litespeed

Seems like Goruck has better customer service / more availability, so I'm leaning toward that, but the TAD seems more versatile.

What do you guys think?

I just picked up a Osprey Quasar 30 today for £35 and that seems pretty good for the price. But for you I'd go with the TAD Fast Pack Litespeed.

I've never found molle useful. My other hobbies are /dbt/ and /k/. If your doing weekend trips and camping and stuff is go at least 40l. I never carry a backpack on my back on the bike. Always strap it to the passenger seat. Backpacks kill the back on any ride over 30 min. I guess 40l is a lot for edc but I couldn't use a casual back pack for camping. I have a lot of bags and packs. Have never been disappointed with any north face bag.

My dad got me a TAD litespeed as a surprise for not being a disappointment as a son or something, and this bag is fucking great. The quality of it is beyond what I had expected, and I would put it above the GR0.

That being said, this bag is stupid expensive. I'm planning on taking it with me to walk the GA part of the Appalachian trail, but the bag feels as though its more suited to strapped on the back of a SEALRangerMARSOC/k/ommando than some asshole going for his first nature walk.

All in all, both bags will work for what you are aiming for, my friend has a GR1 and he swears by GoRuck shit (although he used a 5.11 pack for a GoRuck event, go figure). Im absolutely in love with my Litespeed and I'm really looking forward to beating the shit out of it. Just go with whatever one you think looks cooler.

I have the GR0 and I love it. You're right about Goruck's customer service. I got the GR0 on pre-order when they were announced, but they weren't able to meet the deadline they promised, so they refunded $100 of the order as store credit which I then spent on a source bladder and some darn tough socks.

Between the two the Tad is less overpriced. The GR's are massively overpriced. They're extremely well built with no cheaping out on materials, but the same can be said for the litespeed and it offers more features at a better price point.

Goruck is better for hiding your powerlevel. Litespeed is more tacticool looking.

The Litespeed offers much more options for attaching items to the outside of the pack. Not talking about molle pouches, but camping gear. With the GR you're fairly limited to whatever you can fit inside the pack, it's not going to be easy to hang things off the top or bottom.

It's however you expect to use it and what you want to get out of it. The GR0 with the Tad admin pouch on the back is a god tier combo for me and there's not much I would trade it for. I still kind of want a Litespeed (if they would make more in fucking foliage) but I would use it a whole lot less, and the strap design doesn't really look like it would have held up to what my GR0 has brushed off for the past 2 years.

Thanks for the writeup - went for the Goruck GR0 since TAD seems to be keeping supply limited. Whether that is for marketing purposes to have false scarcity or because they just suck at supply chain, it doesn't instill confidence in their company for me.

I want a company I know I'll be able to order shit from and get service if my backpack has issues.

The only thing jansport really has going for them is their warranty, but that won't do you any good if your backpack takes a shit on you and you have to hike out with only one strap. Also, they get the exit angle wrong on their straps pretty often. The straps just suck all around.

I have two really friends with fairly young children, they will be going to school soon and I didn't want them to give them shitty backpacks to their kids. irony is both of them are equally poor.

from kindergarten to like the 6th grade I carried the same pack. [pic related] it was an out brook. I swear to this day that backpack was one of the best made packs I had growing up. It lasted lots of inawoods adventures, school bus trips, field trips, family road trips of many miles and locations.

I just went online to search for the brand to possibly buy some new ones... ANNND from what I can tell they no longer exist...

so /out/ help me out. Is there a brand comparable to this?

The bag is meshy with very light weight fabrics. but they're strong as hell. perfect for a little kid. [light weight and strong] HELL I wish I had an adult version. lol

He likes them but he immediately had buyers remorse when he saw that my custom bag that was a fraction of the price was the same quality if not better. Anyway, I’ll stop the crotchety whining about the Gorcuck and move on to my recommendation. I mentioned them before but I’m a huge fan of Tom Bihn. I’d recommend the Tom Bihn Synapes 25 but if you want a motorcycle pack then the smart alec with glowwire might be the better choice. I’ll let you do your own research, but I just wanted to share my thoughts. Let me know if you have any questions or want to see more pictures of my ruck

It does have a little more durability I guess with the two layers of 1000 denier cordura, but that adds a shit ton of weight to a pack that cant hold much.

People get it for the brand name more than anything so they can run their tough mudders and mud runs with bricks duct-taped in them and look tacticool. Its honestly fucking stupid.

A black jansport is just as good.

After seeing dozens upon dozens of busted or threadbare jansport straps, yes, I do. The straps seem to be attached to the backpack by the single seam that closes the top of the backpack up. The reason why jansport can have a warranty like they do is because those backpacks are made extremely cheaply so it's easy for them to just send someone a new one because it costs them next to nothing anyways.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the % markup on the jansport backpacks is higher than the Gorucks if you get a Goruck on sale. Jansports are made in China, probably in some dimly lit sweatshop with no AC. I bet it costs them a few bucks each to make a single backpack and they turn around and sell them for $40+ for the no-frills models. Gorucks are meticulously made in the US out of a fabric that is extremely hard to work with, with bartacks everywhere, built in such a way that you would seriously have to be trying your damnedest to actually tear it up. The two might both have lifetime warranties, but like I said, that warranty is no good to you until you make it out of the woods with the annoyance of having one or zero straps.

Not to mention the retarded placement and angle of the JS straps. The straps are at such retarded angles that I often see people wearing them and the entire load of the backpack is isolated on the inside edge of the straps on their shoulders, because the straps aren't laying flat and the weight isn't being distributed. Which probably also contributes to their short lifespan. Jansport is utter shit.

So that's something I've heard but can't attest to personally. I was talking to a peace corps recruiter about gear and they say a lot of areas where they work the military has a bad legacy and you don't want to be associated with it. They don't make formal gear recommendations but when I talked to PCVs on the forums about my Goruck their advice was to get an Osprey. There was also another pack review that mentioned something similar. the review was about a photography pack for slumming (in India I think?) and I remember the reviewer was Nordic, pretty tall and had a blond ponytail. I can't find it but maybe that description will tip off someone else's memory. So I guess, to answer your question, I can't elaborate substantively. All I have is hearsay, maybe it's bullshit. Probably a question for one of the bag threads on /trv/

honestly it's about as perfect as I think any bag can get. It's made for cycling, particularly bicycle couriers, but I use it everytime i get on my motorbike. The main difference in design would be that a typical backpacking pack would come up above shoulder height, but on a bicycle/motorbike (or when prone), this is a big problem as you cant tilt your head back for the riding position.

anyway I do love it. It's been to plenty of different countries, hiked and been on my motorbike (with plenty of crashes when off road) and still looks pretty much new.

Being a foreigner is always more noticeable, backpack or no.

I actually have that pack(in black). I use it as a daily bag. it's doing alright for me, the 20L version isn't very wide though so if you really want to fill it it starts to stick out a lot.

it's relatively leakproof(used it on a ski-trip and normal rainy conditions, no water got in) and the waterbag slot can fit a 2L bag which I did use quite a lot.

I usually use a Targus but was gifted a massive (for me anyway) surplus Austrian pack. It's a bit on the heavy side but it's my first 'big boy' pack. Is there anything I should know about it? It doesn't have a frame but seems to be able to distribute weight well enough.

Don't get the echo. My first Goruck was the Radio Ruck and I ended up hating it. Too small so I always felt limited when I wanted to pack a lot of things. It doesn't come with a frame sheet so you have to make one yourself unless you want the bag to feel like shit on your back unless it's fully packed. And any Molle accessories worth a shit require three rows, not two. Gave the radio ruck to my girlfriend and bought the GR0. If the GR0 had existed when I bought the first one then I never would have gotten the RR but they came out with it afterwards.

IIRC the echo is even smaller than the RR so I would have hated that one even more. In my opinion the only goruck bags worth a shit are the GR0 and the GR1, and the slick/lightweight rucks of the corresponding size.

I might go with an SD20 and stich what I need. Right now GR are only selling black GR0s which are a bit too tactical for me. I'd prefer sand/java but it doesn't look like people resell them much.

Dont ride with a backpack on if youre on a motorcycle.. Trust me I ride and after like 25 miles. You get a nasty sharp pain in either of your shoulders. I've tried many packs. Normally I just use a piece of 8mm rope through the front part of my frame and create a loop in a sense that my backpack straps can go through and use the waist strap to tuck under my seat area so the pack sits on my tank. Takes like 5 seconds to get off... And its a backpack not a tank bag.

I'm still stuck trying to decide between a Herschel Classic or Parker, versus a GR1.
The price difference is like 40/50 dollars CAD versus 450 dollars CAD since the dollar exchange rate is like sub-75 cents to one USD.
I have looked at an obscene amount of backpacks, and the ONLY one that isn't a GR1 that fits in every other department for EXACTLY what I need (including aesthetics) are those two Herschel packs.
I have the money, but trying to justify spending close to 500 dollars on a backpack when I'm going into College. Any other suggestions?

That's literally the lowest possible requirement for a backpack.

_ANYTHING_ that even remotely qualifies as container with two loops will be more than enough for your needs.

Don't get too hung up on details, just buy something cheap you find locally. If you want to get fancy, get something with a hip belt.

And in case it wasn't clear:
You'd be fucking retarded to spend more than 50 bucks on this.
