whats with all this love for the wide mouth nalgenes? they're alright bottles but I find they're really leaky around the cap, and tend to hold water in the lid spilling it everything you open the bottle. little things yeah, but why deal with them if you don't have to?

narrow mouth is better imo

Fair enough. I still prefer to bring a thermos and keep my water in half liter plastic bottles. Usualy a 1 liter thermos in winter and for summer I have a small one that only takes about four cups of espresso.

A regular disposable water bottle is great; it can be refilled, as you drink it you can crush it flat, and you can throw it away. When you want to use a flat one just blow through the opening and it's full size again. Get a couple 2 liters for your pack and a couple 16 oz'ers for drinking from. I think people who spend money on water bottles are all idiots. But then again, I think the same thing about people who have wallets.

Kleen Kanteen(insulated) or Hydro Flask for something that keeps stuff cold/hot.

Yes I don't believe it really matters to much when it comes to the brand of water bottles but the guy who was bitching and says he reuses plastic bottled water bottles is autistic. Your not supposed to reuse them they have expectation dates on the bottle, they are only for one time use!!!!

Even if you pay a buck for a gas station 16oz water bottle every 6 months, that's the more expensive in 5 years.
I'm more frugal than most, but even I broke a tenner for a wide mouth Nalgene. It's damn near indestructible, easy to clean/fill, and won't leave me high and dry when it catches a stray ember or rolls into a cactus. Plus it doesn't make the water taste like sucking on pennies or licking a fleshlight.

I never understood the Nalgene hype. The wide mouth is awkward as hell to drink out of (especially when moving), and there are no advantages whatsoever.

The expiration date on the bottle is for the liquid, not the bottle. The gas barrier properties of PET aren't great. Oxygen diffusing into the liquid causes issues with the liquid spoiling eventually. Not a problem if you use it every once in a while.

What are Nalgenes made of nowadays? The Bisphenol A in those older Polycarbonate Nalgenes sure isn't healthy.

I still use a big 32oz nalgene for work though, i like to see how much i drink throughout the day. Its easy to fill with ice/water from my fridge. it does tend to get kind of funky around the lid since it always seems to drip when i drink out of it, so i have to wash it every day

I use two 2.5L water bags (like the Evernew ones, but free samples from a packaging manufacturer), one for dirty water and one as a hydration bladder in my pack. The smartwater bottle is for backflushing the sawyer mini and for whenever I don't feel like drinking out of a tube.

All three plus the hydration hose weigh as much as a single 1L Nalgene, but I get a maximum of 6 liters of water capacity instead of just one, and a full hydration system.
