Those species probably contribute to the food webs of many ecosystems in an innumerable amount of ways, which we likely still haven't figured out. Campaigning for the extinction of such organisms is ridiculous, under the pretense that they simply make you uncomfortable. Trying to fuck around with things like that could lead to the collapse of ecosystems and widespread species extinction.

Stop seeing nature as something to fight against. Part of the beauty of going camping is finding ways to temporarily live within the multiplicity of beings that exist within a forest, be they annoying or enjoyable to encounter. Now, by all means, that isn't to say that you shouldn't swat a mosquito, or yank out a rock when you find one on your body. By all means, do that. Just understand that pining for an idea that wishes to turn the wilderness into a sanitised playpen for your convenience is extremely selfish, and ultimately foolish.

I just bought this today. It should be here monday or tuesday. I ~cannot~ fucking wait to enjoy /out/ on MY terms. I go to terrible buggy places (swamps, fallow fields, pricker patches, etc) and WITHOUT HYPERBOLE my suffering on many occasoins has surpassed that of Jesus.

I even got the mitts because FUCK GNATS AND FUCK MOSQUITOES idgaf.

When it comes-in I will post a pic of me enjoying myself in the woods, impervious to the wicked swarm.

There are a million types of mosquitos only 2 bite, the ecosystem will be fine . Ticks are mostly a parasite so killing them off wont effect anything. Not sure about black flies but they are assholes so fuck em .

Also I would like to point-out that I went cambin this weekend and the mosquitoes were so bad I ate like 30 of them with my dinner. I had to sweat my ballce off in my hoodie with a head-only bugnet (all I had but better than nothing!) and the skeetos still destroyed my hands. I had fucking bites on the palms of my hands even. It was helltorture.

I'm chuffed to bits that this thing comes with mitts. I so fucking wished I had those mitts the other night. Anyway, be jelly etc.

Alaskafag here. An old native trick is to find some dry shelf fungus ("Conk") and burn it. The smoke naturally repels mosquitoes. In other parts of the world you can pull this trick off by foraging for herbs and burning them around your site. Extra points for saturating your clothes in the smoke. Just don't burn them.

I used to avoid it, but now i use it if I'm expecting it to be real bad. I figure using deet on clothing and a little skin is a lesser risk than whatever i may get from ticks and mosquitos. We're talking using it at most a couple weekends a month in the summer.

Honestly, not washing works best for me. With 10 days of unrestrained body odor on your side, pretty much nothing lingers around (including humans). Learned it from working the fields up in Prudhoe.

DEET is toxic shit, especially the slow-release and 100% stuff. The mosquitoes in Florida and Alaska have adapted to it anyways. Unless you take pleasure in ruining your plastic gear while having a seizure, don't buy into the hype.

I'm actually fairly skinny and fairly fit, it's just a misleading pitcher, and I guess I've been piggying-out too much this summer. One of my biggest setbacks has been not having my bike for a few weeks. I usually do about 40 miles a week just for excercise, so I softened-up but now that it's fixed I can start riding again.
