I remember hiking a lot of Yosemite in the old days, and the bears saw people as a potential food opportunity. You can't hunt in any US National Park. Before the days of bear-proof food containers, we had to hang our food at least twelve feet up, suspended between two trees.
Where I live now there is a season for black bears. I rarely see them, but they run as soon as they see me. I've even set up trail cameras near my tent and never caught one picture. To most animals, another animal is either a danger, a potential food source, or potential mate. When there is a hunting season, the subject animals quickly learn to avoid the two-legged animals.
