You can catch a train or a bus to most places but it will be pretty slow going.
Depending on how long you're in Australia, you may be better off buying a car and then selling it when you're done.
Just remember, Australia is way less densely populated than the U.S or Europe and we don't have no fancy high speed rail. Once you get far enough inland the gaps between towns become really big.
