Lots of very nice scandi high carbon affordable knives. I have a wood jewel that is fucking amazing. About $40-$65 bucks will get you a beautiful, well made knife. The scadi single bevels are also a breeze to get razor sharp and easy to touch up in the field.

Scrade is releasing the updated version of the SCHF36/37 as the SCHF51/52. I have no idea when they're coming out though.
It has a longer, hooked handle, and they removed the jimping on the underside of the handle.

but I think schrade sheaths are way too huge. its like you have a chainsaw on your belt.

making your own sheath involves extra costs for kydex.

great teflon like coating on it unlike the becker stuff on the 30 series. great size, being just under 7inchs. 5.5 is too short and 7 always gets in the way when you hip carry.

theres a reason its got 700 some reviews on amazon m80

Or just get a Mora. Excellent and cheap. You can bet your life on it, but it's not so expensive that you would be afraid to use it.

I own the straight tanto edge version. Never sharpened it and still works like it did out of the box a year ago. It's my EDC.

It is a piece of metal, any thing can happen. I've seen some one break a BK 2, a quarter inch piece of steel. I have seen broken Busse, a over 600 dollar knife. Just cause you think some thing can't happen, mean it will. I also made a topic on /k/ some time ago about it, had pics etc. You sound like a fan boy, so go fuck yourself.

Expect most blades made from 1095 steel to be semi durable, however you will need to constantly sharpen this thing. Generally, these are most of the blades you see swords made with this kind of steel so you can definitely expect to give it a decent beating without breaking.

Assuming it fits in your hand and you can sharpen it when you need, and, barring any special abuse from your part it'll serve you for years.

You're being overcharged by about $30 unless you're buying the new VG1 version which in which case you're being overcharged by $10-15. Also VG1 isn't worth the extra $20, get an AUS8 version if you can.

I know there's a lot of arguing and shit posting on this board these days, but not all of it is garbage.

I recommend a knife a little smaller. I started with a Schrade 6",and the thing weighed more than I cared for, and was much too bulky to be innawoods with.

I then bought a becker bk16 for 50 bucks ( normally much more, but I got a dumb young girl at Cabellas customer service to match some online store that charged 30 bucks for shipping)

It's a 4" fixed blade that weighs a fraction of shade, as well as being a much higher quality knife, easier to sharpen, and isn't the least bit bulky. Functionally it's going to do everything my schrade will.

I'm not saying get the bk16, but look into knives at a similar size. I promise you won't be disappointed, and you'll save yourself some money in the long run.

Unlike the other anon, if you cannot find a carbon V version, get the San Mai.

You seriously have to replace the sheath though.

I prefer the Fallkniven A1 or S1

Extrema Ratio makes cool stuff but is way overpriced.

Also, their customer service is shit. They honestly believe you should bow down to them because they make the best gear in the universe.

There's a cool story on BladeForums of an italian militaryman who dropped his knife by accident, the knife shattered, and Extrema Ratio refused to replace it.

Imo, even worse than Chris Reeve knives

built like a tank, bad geometry. Unless you are going to baton concrete blocks, you want a ~4.5'' blade, 1/8'' thick. Full flat or scandi grind, but there are some really good saber grinds out there as well.

If you're dead set on a cold steel, get a master hunter in cpm 3V.

Otherwise, get an esee, a tops bob, or look up LTWK - the GNS is $155.

Trying to make one blade do everything is kind of a bad idea. This is how you end up with guys cutting the shit out of themselves doing point work with a fuckall huge knife or breaking their knife trying to baton it through wood.

I use three blades when I'm /out/. The first is an Opinel No 10 or No 8 for light work like opening packages, precision cutting or skinning small animals. The second knife is a Camillus KaBar clone for general heavy work like breaking down ribs or cutting kindling. The third is a Boker VoxHawk that I use for everything else, generally cutting wood poles or breaking down carcasses.

But one knife to do it all? Recipe for disaster.

I divide up my tasks and carry tools that handle those tasks well by carrying more or less a Nessmuk trio, chopper, whittling knife and hunting/cooking knife

If I don't plan on doing much of a certain task then that tool is left behind to save weight, if I want use much firewood then the hatchet or axe is taken away, no cooking or skinning and the butchers knife is left at home too

I'd agree that most of the time you shouldn't rely on a one tool option, at the very least something that will handle tough work like a Kabar and then a folder like opinel that can take care of small things would keep a lot of frustration away when you actually need to use the tools
