I was out fishing yesterday, clumsy me got my dirty old fish hook stuck under my finger skin. It barley started bleeding. Should I get a tetanus shot? my last one was probably 10+ years ago

Tetanus vaccinations last a maximum of 10 years. Get a booster. Boostrix is your best bet as it covers other bacterial infections as well. It's either free or very cheap

People catch tetanus when outdoors fairly easily, fishing hooks and rusty nails aside.

If you have health insurance, your provider will most likely cover the booster. Otherwise, expect to pay $60-$80 out of pocket at a local pharmacy chain (CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid). If you did in fact contract Tetanus, you'll start exhibiting symptoms between 4 to 21 days after you've been infected with the bacteria. I'd try to get the booster soon if you are that worried. Costs are likely to sky rocket if you are infected and you let it get serious.

Why fear Tetanus at all when you have worse thing to worry about in the wild like Rabies?
Tetanus is easy to prevent. Rabies, well you don't have a vaccine to take as a preventative measure. And when you do need it, I heard it's quite painful.

I just sliced my middle finger open with my machete today.. that gets used very often. very dirty, slight flash rust in spots. but it was a freshly sharpened edge. didn't even clean the wound. ill let you know if I get tetanus.

tetanus is normally refreshed every 10 years so you just might take this opportunity to do it. as said by others it could be free or around the 50€ range for the Vaccine but a bit more for the doctor cost. Which is still quite cheap if you consider the risk. and you might injure yourself 2 year down the road again.

I work around animals( including horses) all day, and animal shit is tetanus central, particularly horse shit. Every time the doc asks how I am doing on boosters, I get one. I've seen a lamb die of it, and I sure as fuck want no part in that shitfest.

As in you dig it out a bit, and cut it open a little so the air gets to it. Let it heal inside out. This will make tetanus a non issue. The hardy tetanus spore will vegetate into the full form of the bacterium in this environment, as Clostridium Tetani it is an obligate anaerobe bacteria, which is another way of saying that it cannot survive with oxygen around (but it will turn into it's dormant endospore form, which is why it's everywhere)

It's not so bad anymore. I had a scare a couple years ago when a raccoon bit me while taking out the trash, it's a shot near the bite site, then 4 shots in the arm over the next two weeks.

It used to be something like 8 shots in the abdomen over 3 weeks or some shit, and I heard from my doc that it really sucked, but that's not what I had to get.

Fuck the EMT, I'm a board registered surgeon. It's not rust that causes tetanus, it's bacteria in soil. The rust is simply oxidized iron. I would still recommend a visit with your clinic practitioner.
