I live in NJ, there's a public boat ramp around the block from me. I launch into Oyster Creek and then paddle out into Barnegat Bay. Some friends of mine live on the water so I take the kayak across town to their house and dock in their back yard.

Bowman Lake in Glacier NP (pic). You can swim, though it's pretty cold. Crater Lake in Oregon is similar.

Roof racks are mutli-functional and can look good on certain little cars.

They sell kits you can use to tie the yak directly to the roof as well with foam padding, but I would trust the racks a lot more.

Asked this before but didn't really get any good responses. Looking for a fishing kayak for around $500. Know nothing about kayaks. Want one as short as possible because I have a small car. However I am 6'2" but I don't think that should be a problem

I have a Frenzy by ocean kayak. I'm pretty sure its 9 feet. it holds 325 pounds. It tracks well and turns well. Kayak guides say it has really high initial stability, but a bit lower secondary stability. I haven't tipped in it yet but I've only been in relatively flatwater. The only other kayak I have been in was the ocean kayak scrambler xt which is 11 feet, and in comparison I feel very fast and maneuverable in the frenzy. I am short, so I don't even use the foot rests, I just put my legs out straight most of the time and the fit comfortably. it has a high weight limit, but the sitting area is a bit small, which is my only complaint.

I bought mine on craigslist for 300, hardly used. I think a new one is anywhere between 500 and 700. Just keep on eye on craigslist. They are also a popular model for kayak rentals, so you could see if any in your area are selling used kayaks. They generally have good deals and take good care of their kayaks.

Some people don't like that it doesn't have dry storage, but I have read a lot of horror stories about built in dry storage that doesn't really work, so i don't really mind. it has from and back storage with bungee cord. I have a 10L drybag which fits fine in either storage area. Going to get a 20L next for towels and a change of clothes and stuff. Overall it has great reviews online, and a lot of people say its a great beginner kayak.

Yeah I don't understand why anyone would want one. I saw someone trying to use one in low wind conditions the other day, and they just couldn't handle it. They never made it more than 30 feet from the launch and they came back

Go to the Desolation Wilderness while you're there. I camped at by one of the lakes at the base of a mountain and it was great. The Wilderness is a lot more secluded and less touristy than Tahoe.

Watch videos on youtube. I watched a guy load and secure a 13 foot canoe onto a toyota camry with no roof rack. It can be done.

Someone here told me that you can use 2 or 3 pool noodles spaced equally on top of the car as padding, and then use 3-4 tiedowns super tight through the windows. Haven't tried it yet.

Yes, there are hybrids, but you could take any kayak anywhere if you're skilled enough except for intense rivers. You will get tired faster with the wrong kayak. Middle ground for lakes/calm rivers/calm ocean would be 7-9'

As long as you're not kayaking in intense rivers or heavy ocean you'll be alright.

I don't fish, but I hear most people want an 11 foot minimum for fishing. I hear 11 to 15 is the preference, especially if you will be ocean fishing. I have a 9 foot kayak and I don't think I could successfully fish in it at all, maybe in completely flat water, but nothing choppy. I am large and have to pay attention to the water to stay balanced in choppy/wavy conditions, theres no way I could wrestle with a fish at the same time, but I'm not an experienced fisher at all.

I love my 9 foot because its easy to maneuver and is fun for day kayaking or playing in waves, but I hardly even see it as a boat.

NRS and Advanced Elements are solid brands. Ive taken NRS inflatables down 3+ whitewater and AE's out in the ocean.

The problem with long kayaks is they're heavier. Not ideal when you have to carry it long distances.

Haven't been there in a kayak yet, but I bring my canoe there all the time, when it's rough I fish bass and perch in Sango Locks. When the lake is calm I troll for trout and togue. Beautiful lake, would love to kayak it sometime.

Would love to hit up Moosehead sometime, but I mostly kayak in the Saco Bay.

A trolley or set of wheels is really easy to make from some pvc and a set of wheels.

A diy setup can cost frm $20-$40 dollars depending on what you have laying around the house. Compared to $80-$100 for a store bought version.

The wheels I made for my 12.6' sit on top go right through the scupper holes, and then they can split in half and be stowed in the dry storage area when you're done.

How do you think a kayak would do in really weedy conditions?

I want to explore a stream near me but it is utterly choked with weeds. Too small for a motor boat, a tad too small for a row boat and rowing in weeds is awful. The canoe was ok until it got too shallow and I lost an oar (the bottom is like quick sand).

My last resort was a kayak, but I'm afraid the oars will get too heavy from picking up the weeds, or get stuck on the weeds from skimming on top.

Should be OK, I kayak through waterlilies all the time. You might pick up a few more weeds than in a canoe though because the paddles are less vertical but I just shake them off. If your boat has a skeg that might catch stuff too but if mine ever has I never noticed.

Hell no! It's s 3 foot half submerged rusty culvert, I need to renew my tetanus shot, and I don't do drainage during thunderstorm season. But it was a hot day and the cold air coming out of the pipe was pretty enticing.

I assumed it was a carp cause I see em all the time but on watching the video at home I wasn't completely sure it wasn't a drum either.

So Kayaking thread, I'm recently thinking about getting back into Kayaking. I've still got my old spray skirt that fits and I'm buying an old kayak of a work colleague.

However I haven't done it since sc/out/s and have got a good local pretty calm river to go down to break me into it.

My issue is that this river is always got fishers on it. What's the etiquette around fishers line?

Do I make them aware I'm passing and let them reel in there line or do I just go over it?

I stay away from their lines when there's room but I've had assholes cast right in front of me and if you don't like boats don't fish narrow channels where boats go.

Emotion has the consistently shittiest boats on the market, in both performance and durability.

Just took a trip from Logansport in Texas down the Sabine and finished on the south side of Toledo Bend. I'm really loving my jackson journey, 14' but still maneuverable and the rotomolded plastic took a beating.

I'm also on long island and got the field and stream eagle talon 12' from dicks on sale. It handles the long island sound extremely well, and any other freshwater lakes its ever been in. It's a sit on top, so it fishes excellently.

I would love to try a hobie or a jackson, but for half the price, I love this kayak.

Monterey bay is in general pretty much kayak-able entirely.

As for the best kayaking trip I've ever been to, Elkhorn Slough is where its at. Literally a kayakers wet dream.

That one will probably do you very nicely. Just pick your days for going on the sound. As little wind as possible and as flat water as possible.

Also, if you plan on whitewater and ocean usage, learn and practice re-entry, it's a little different with a sit in. You also want to dress appropriately for the water temp. Hypothermia is no joke and fairly easy to get. In LI right now the water is bathtub warm, so no special clothing is necessary, but quick dry clothing always helps. Up north or in a few months however, the water will be much colder and you should adjust your clothing.

I'm on the north shore by riverhead, right on the sound!

It's easy. Dont go in super rough water, and its easy as riding a bike. My first time out was in 10mph winds, which isnt too high, but not recommended for an amateur. I was fine, maybe a little exhausted at the end of the day, but I was never afraid or anything.

My sot is so stable it would take some doing to get it to flip. I've stood up on it before, and while it's definitely a little shaky, I can still stand.

bought an ocean kayak trident ultra this summer, been using it around the southern coast of norway so far. it's a bit longer and narrower than most SOTs, which makes it faster and go straighter. it takes 210 kgs, so now i can bring shit like a solar panel, stereo, chair and a cooler. it even fits two people over shorter distances. the downside is that it weighs about 38 kgs when empty, but i still manage to get it on top of my tiny, shitty car. if you plan on covering some distance i would get something longer than 10 feet with a rudder.
