I don't think your boots need restoration. Saddle soap obviously did a great job cleaning them. Now they need some grease. It will make the the colour darker. Just don't wear them until the grease has absorbed. Dry leather don't last long.

I hope you get the idea. You need leather grease. It's not expensive. I don't know what country you're from so I can't give you the specific product, but it's where the horse care is.

There are many expensive products for leather, but you don't need them.

For both my saddle and boots, I use leather CPR. Looks almost new after a good scrub.

You used Saddle soap to clean

After you use saddle soap, you need to use Mink Oil to preserve and protect

Mink oil is AFAIK the best there is, but seriously it's not available for the normal people. Unless the boots are very expensive, it makes no sense to pay high prices for the mink oil. Regular leather grease does the job.

The biggest mistake OP can do here is to go on without any oil or grease. Don't do that.

I have been destroying sneakers at an astounding rate doing a few day hikes every week and want to buy something purpose built.

I'm trying to decide between buying a ~$100 pair of light hiking shoes like the keen targhee or whatever bullshit I get from REI... or do I drop $300 on a real pair of boots that I can take backpacking when I eventually work up to that, I've been looking at Danner Mountain Light, Asolo 200 GV, Scarpas.

go to a boot store and try many on also look up reveiws ther are a few rules one:a cheap boot is normally not good. a good boot is normally not cheap. two: more of a saying then a rule but it has been said spend as much as you can on two thing you boots and your bed. cause if your not in one your in another. i would recomend whites or nicks pricey but god tier footwear.
