I don't get tomahawks for /out/. Don't get me wrong, I like them a lot and I actuallt want one, but as a weapon to fuck around with. It's not as good as an ax or hatchet for processing wood, not as good as a hammer for hammering. It's good for braining catburglars and pulverizing redcoats, which isn't specifically an /out/ activity.

Idunno, I think in practical /out/ terms a tomahawk isn't really great anything, but it's "okay" for lots of stuff. That said I'm sure they're funner'n horsecocks and this is why I want one. I recently bought and tried a tomahawk for the first time after years of using a gränsfors bruks small forest axe and similar axes and hatchets.

It was a cold steel trail tomahawk. Out of the box it looked like shit, was attached poorly to the haft with a screw but loose otherwise and was quite dull, even for an axe. I sanded away the black paint, gave it a patina, removed the screw, sanded the handle until it got a standard tomahawk friction/centrifugal fit and sharpened it, only then was it a good tool.

I say good but it wasn't all that. I could chop down small trees, process branches and do other typical camp chores, It wasn't, however, good at anything heavier, not even close to my small forest axe. The only way to split firewood was to use it as a wedge and I'm worried that will weaken it structurally.

Light, versitile for smaller chores and fun to use but not a good axe, I'm afraid.

I love tomahawks. There's just something about them. They're actually really functional tools in a lot of respects, and the're lighter than a normal hatchet. Throwing them with a friend is a great way to pass the time, too.

I've heard good things about h&b forge hawks. I like that tomahawks have easily replaceable handles and are lighter than an axe of comparable size. You won't chop down a tree with one, but I think they are better than a hatchet by far.

The main thing tomahawks have for them over hatchets is weight and that you can use the head of a hawk to carve a handle for itself.
If you plan to be out for a long time and want an axe even though you don't think you'll use it too often go for a hawk.
It can do anything an axe can do aside from split logs, just not as quickly.
I use mine to make stakes and to chop 4"+ branches off of fallen trees for fire wood, then I throw it at stumps for fun.

Here's my tomahawk. 20" handle and it's better than any hatchet I've used except for maybe a Gränsfors Bruk but it's not far. Weighs only 18oz which is really damn light.

Reason I carry mine is because I dislike batoning and enjoy thin knives for cutting. That and if I gotta chop it works fine for what is it.

Tomahawks generally have a straight handle that tapers from the head to the handle. The head is held on by friction, instead of having a tang or a pin through the eye like some hatchets. Tomahawks are generally lighter and have longer handles than a hatchet.

Paid about $90 shipped. I think the scales are just glass filled nylon? Saw a dude take the handle off and just paracord the whole thing. I prefer this model over the wood handle since I don't have to worry about it breaking while throwing / chopping.

I decided I wanted it and just kept checking Amazon for a deal. I don't use it as much as I'd like, but I definitely love it. Totally bomb proof. The picture I posted earlier is the day I got it. Since then I've used some ultra flat spray paint to customize it a bit. I'll post a pic when I can.

I looked up the weights and they're way heavier than I'd have expected. Comparable to a normal axe. I want to like the chogan, I really do. And people keep talking about how poly handles on the fiskars suck because they can't be field-replaced, but then >>555688 An easily replaced wood handle is a great feature

I'd love a hawk to be a viable tool compared to an axe but I'm just not seeing it.

You can throw hatchets too but no one wants to risk snapping their Gransfors if they miss or even dinging it up on a rock.

That's one of the reasons I like mine for it's thickness but lightweight compared to normal hatchets.

It's mostly a poll, there to balance the swing. Not sure if it's hardened. But even if it was, I'd not use it to hammer metal. It is a tool to work wood, and for that it needs a hard temper only on the blade so the edge holds.

I take a Trail Hawk when I go tramping because it's light and it works. I don't usually have to cut wood, but when I do I'm not autistic enough to baton with a $150 knife when a $40 hawk does it better.

Also, in New Zealand, it's legal to carry a Tomahawk (as defined as an axe and a tool with justifiable purpose) and a decent folding knife in public places. Police can give you a real hard time for carrying a fixed blade unless you're hunting.

And they're a lot lighter to carry. heaps of fun to throw. would definitely recommend cold steel hawks. they look shit but once you remove that shit paint and sand the handle a bit they look really great.

As for the woods chogan i've always been intrigued by that but probably won't get one.

does /out/ have an ideal hawk head weight? i've used various axes/tomahawks in my day. l would say both have there place in /out/. really it's all about personal preference. i've gone through some different phases of axe choice over the years. i used to use a small full metal type hawk exclusively for awhile. then i think i made a jump up to a full sized felling axe. then i think i eventually moved to cold steel tomahawk. now recently i moved to an axe with a 24 inch handle, and it just seems perfect between weight and work and such.

I'd say both chop equally fine

The plus side to an axe is being able to process larger wood and split, but the downside being that you lose your ability to do some finer stuff

the plus side to the hawk is that its alot lighter, handles easy to replace, head can easily come off to be used as a knife. and if you need to split you can carve a wedge and use the hammer head to pound the wooden wedge through

on a last note, i have a friend who skins everything from squirrel to deer with his SOG fasthawk. he swears by that thing

It depends. For an allrounder with a splitting head behind the blade 400g is quite alright. For a carving and woodworking tool 300g seems appropriate.

I got this guy a few weeks ago. I haven't had the chance to take it /out/ yet but I've thrown in around in my yard some. I mostly was only able to throw it in the dirt but stuck a piece of wood a few times.

We just started carrying it at our store, but I figure I want an actual axe.

Tomahawks are awesome for clearing brush and processing some firewood, but axes are superior for chopping.

Plus I already have a machete.

Hawks are basically old style axes, while "modern" hatchets and all are based on new style axes.

Nothing against hawks though, the handle designs makes it easy to replace the handle without needing tools besides the head, the head design just isn't as good as a hatchet imo.
Good for what they are though, easier to clear brush with a hawk than a hatchet imo.

Axes have been with us since they were made of stone. The tomahawk is an invention by industrialized society designed to suit the needs of native Americans. The tomahawk is a trade axe from when Western America was being 'civilized'.

The function is very different, although both cut wood. An axe is made to split or bite wood, take chunks out of it by levering a wedge between or across layers with force. It is a rough tool that can fell and section a tree in minutes. A tomahawk is primarily a carving tool that has only a secondary use as splitter. It will cut down a tree with time, but it will take a day of effort.

The tomahawk is much lighter, usually well under a pound. Axes go from just over a pound for a light hatchet to 3 pounds or more for heavy felling axe. The hawk has a narrow blade that only widens around the eye while an axe has a wedge shape. A hawk can easily get stuck on a full swing while most axes take some special art to bury them into a tree so they won't come out. You can use a tomahawk as a throwing weapon, although I would advise against it. A thrown axe will break its handle. Ax heads are hung into a handle from above with a wooden wedge. 'Hawks are removable and are put onto the handle from below.

For clearing brush you should use a machete.

The basic tomahawk was just a cheap european axe that they traded. The basic design goes back at least a thousand years before that. It's a simple way to make an axe when you're working a forge. They're thin because they're war axes, made for cutting flesh, not wood. Most tomahawks offered for sale now are actually belt axe designs, like >>555062, and work just fine on wood.

Yes. The design that sold well came from the ship axes issued by the British and French navies. But they mass produced them in designs influenced by what the Indians were willing to trade for. So it is a mix of functionality, cultural clash, and early marketing.

Otzi the icemans copper axe was pretty much a tomahawk. Well you can argue its not, but The narrow blade reminds me of a tomahawk. That just came to my mind just now. Not the anon your talking too, but I thought that was interesting.

This is just false.
Modern hawks may have come to resemble them but early hawks were made of stone and the early metal versions were modelled after naval boarding axes.
