>>555352While not exactly independant, I have a medium sized garden, hog trap, fishing pole and a couple good foraging spots. I still buy bread, cheese and milk at the grocery store, but I'm down to like $80 a month in groceries. Through bartering I can trade meats and seafoods so I get some variety. Hunting and fishing help a lot, but can be unreliable. Trapping is the way to go for consistent large quantities of meat.
The island I live on could totally support it's 8,000 inhabitants in an apocalypse situation: fruit farms, cattle, lots of chickens, wild game, fish, shellfish, shrimp, crabs, etc. etc.
One day I won't have a grocery bill, I'm just working my way there one step at a time.
