Size up the scene:
Is the patient in immediate danger/do they need to be moved regardless of injuried?
Will you be injured in trying to rescue them?
Once you get to the patient you want to start with BLS (basic life support). If they're clearly unconscious you check for circulation. No pulse? Immediately begin CPR. Have a pulse but aren't breathing? Try to realign their airway, or open it up and see if they have something lodged in their throat. If neither work, begin rescue breathing. Their chest should clearly rise with each breath given.
Are they breathing and have a pulse? Check their body for major bleeds, bandage what you find.
Next you need to worry about the nervous system, if the victim was unconscious when you found them depending on the location, and damage to the victim (i.e. traumatic injuries) you're going to assume they have a spinal injury. You're going to want to pull light traction on their head and stabalize it in line with the rest of their spine. You can use a SAM splint to create an ad-hoc c-collar.
Next you might want to worry about conditions. Are they in the sun? Is the ground cold? Modify the conditions to benefit the victim. 'Staple' them with spine in line, and roll them onto your knees, where you can then put a sleeping pad or sleeping bag (or both), on the ground and gently lay them back on it. Set up a tarp over them to protect them from wind/rain/sun.
That's not everything, but you get the gist.
Everything after that is secondary and you have time to think about it: start taking vitals, splint fractures, diagnose illnesses, yadadadada.
