Cooking equipment.

What do you use?

Do you use it over open fire?

I am looking to buy cooking equipment and I am between those two. Both stainless steel and my interest would be to be able to cook with them on open fire.

I think the Zebra will be better for that, but also heavier.

Are you looking for something to use while backpacking? Car camping? I use a Coleman stove with an attachment that lets me burn either Coleman liquid fuel, Unleaded gasoline or propane; weight no being an issue while car camping, I sometimes use a cast iron skillet and dutch oven. If I'm backpacking I use my Solo Stove and the pot that came with it. The idea being to mostly rehydrate dehydrated foods and to make coffee.

Does that zebra have plastic on the top? If so then i would avoid using it over an open fire just incase. I backpack with a 1 liter pot and a stainless cup. I might add my msr flex skillet if I'm on a short trip and want a pancake. I have used the pot and cup directly on fire, no problems. The skillet i have only used over my stove.

Weight is an issue, it will be for backpacking.

You can take of the plastic thing on the zebra.

Has anyone used the mess kit in an open fire? Did the melt?

I use an old czechoslavakian mess kit I bought off the kommando store. I use it over an open fire, yeah. Looks like shit right now but it works just fine. Comewith a lid that acts as a plate. Pretty nice.

No more than aluminum, if you want any significant measure of antimicrobial you'll need to go copper. They distribute heat less efficiently and no real link between cooking with aluminium and alzheimers.

I don't go hiking for more than three or four days at a time so I use a small cast iron dutch oven for all my cooking. Longer than that I'd probably consider one of this nifty surplus ones (I am a massive weeb so I like the look of the kidney shaped cans)

I'm using a snuskburk, it can't really be beat.
Price is about $10.

I don't use the burner and wind cover. With everything it weights about 1kg. but without those it's well under that.

Inside I keep a alco stove, utensils, alcohol, salt, sponge and diskwasing soap...

Snuskburken is very versitile. It can boil 1.5L water at once (Very good for purification). It's meant for one person, but it's alright for two too when someone it eating out of the lid. Actually I use the lid more since it's the perfect size.

I use it over anything. Hanging it over open fire, putting it IN the fire and coals, and with my alco stove of course.

I use pic related, love the spoon/fork combo. The construction is bomb proof and it isn't too heavy. Only gripe is that the waterbottle is essentially useless because you can't easily access it. Probably gonna end up cutting the sides out and the mouth off, leaving just a plastic cube to store condiments/fuel/soap/ect

Anybody know if light my fire's meal kits are any good? I kinda want one

I use a $5 grease strainer from Walmart. Sturdy aluminum build with a less sturdy handle, but I wish it had a bail handle. I'll either add a bail handle myself, or just get a Mors pot clone.

How much life do you get out of this? I made one once but the heat cycling annealed the steel until it was soft as shit and got dented/deformed to the point of unusability in my pack.

Current setup is stainless utensil holder 'ikea stove' and two stainless dog bowls as pots. Cost about ten euro total.

Nothing too special really. Just one of those objects that triggers memories.

Problems with cleaning it (snow works pretty well), good memories of well needed meals and much needed hot brews on spruce needles, cooffe or cocoa. The bottle for alcohol that comes with it has a nice tenedenecy to leak too, wich could ruin stuff in your pack. But that could easily be countered with a piece of a thin plastic bag being used as a sealer.

I'm all for supporting small business but there's a french kit that is pretty much functionally the same for about half the price at Keep Shooting. Bought and Austrian pack before they went out of sale and am loving it. Thinking of maybe making a frame out of some aluminium tubing later on.

I have the stainless steel version of this. Saw a video where some guy took the paint off and made it all shiny, and one morning after not being able to sleep all night, and not very well for days prior, I went and did it to mine. I regret it and might try some of that black radiator paint on it.
