What foods do you love to have or make at camp? The food you eat after a day of hiking, boating, fishing, etc makes the whole experience worthwhile. Share ideas here.

I love (non-instant) cream of wheat. Takes longer than the instant stuff but totally worth it on a cool night.

I have a skillet that I got like 10 years ago but I'm going to the blue ridge next weekend for 3 days and I'm trying to figure out what I should get. I feel like a pot would be better because I could just make soup or something

that's all I have, a boiler. a pot you can technically fry in if you have to, plus it's good for soup, tea/coffee/dehydrated meals. also those little Knorr packages of noodle and rice sides are awesome. You just boil the water and dump the packet right in. The cheddar/bacon macaroni is fucking awesome and it's like 90¢ a package which is just glorious.

Pic related, my little boiler with the cups that nest inside. They're nice and thick so you can pour boiling broth or coffee right in and it doesn't get too hot

Just keep in mind this little pot is narrow and you won't be able to fry stuff in it really, you might want to get a wider one, depending on what you intend to cook. Stanley makes a lot of different ones and I recommend their stuff because of how happy I am with mine. Stainless steel and super lightweight.

I've never hung it, I don't think that would be easy. If you built a wire collar or harness for it you could hang it easy enough though, it has a shape that will work for that. I've used it over my stove but also on coals. it's just tricky to get the rocks arranged right so you have a stable footing, but it can be done

This. Skip the Oscar Meyer stuff in the lunchmeat cooler (it's not really salami anyway) and get a small stick of dry salami from the deli section (it's usually near the fancy cheeses and olives). Once you break the casing, you'll have about 3-5 days to consume it, depending on ambient temperature and humidity.

Keeping it in a large ziploc freezer bag is a good idea because.
A) It will let you minimize air contact with the open sausage.

and

B) This stuff is very oily and pungent, so you want to keep it sequestered even within your food sack/can to keep it from getting all over your other stuff (especially in bear territory).

Salami fat will soak through a surprising number of materials, including sil-nylon, and then everything in your pack will smell like an old italian man's apartment.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cured meats.

It might be worth it to see if there's a good "old world" deli in your area, all kinds of dried and cured meats that will last for days without refrigeration.

Also check asian and mexican grocery stores for all kinds of dried/cured/freeze dried treats. Man cannot backpack on mac n cheese alone.

While you're in the fancy cheese section, pick up a couple bags of these little calorie bombs.

They're semi-soft cheese, but since they're completely sealed in wax they don't need to be refrigerated.

Take a small handful of jerky (beef or turkey), cut it up in to littles strips and soak it in hot water for about 30-45 minutes.

If you're backpacking, chop up a small shallot (shallots will last for over a week without refrigeration) and sweat it in a little oil. Add the jerky, the water it was soaking in, some dried mushrooms and dried peppers and another half cup to cup of water. Stir in some powdered milk and powdered tomato soup/sauce mix.

Allows to simmer and reduce slightly (adding more water if gets pasty) and serve over rice, instant potatoes, pasta or tortillas.

If you're car camping, you can substitute the dried/dehydrated ingredients for canned tomatoes, condensed milk and fresh vegetables.

You can also serve it over biscuits, which is particularly tasty.

i almost exclusively eat frozen fry ups, i dont summer camp much so temperature is never an issue.

best one is the chicken pasta with marinara. i bring along some oregano and basil, along with some hot sauce and its gourmet food on the trail thats ready in about 5-10 minutes.

if its on the warm side i pack a soft cooler and put 3 of them in, they stay good for the 3 days easily.

I'm not fat I'm skinnier'n fishdicks. Those things are fucking perfect for a long day of exertion. If you've been hiking and sweating in the warm hot heat all day you need a lot of sodium and carbs to replenish. Each packet is like 3 servings, in a normal meal /in/ I wouldn't eat the whole fucking thing buttfuck it's perfect when you're depleted and exhausted.

I ate one of those last weekend after hiking like 20 miles and my shirt was covered in salt stains by the end. I needed my Knorr :[

Steam the rice, pancook the sausage with the mushroom, mix together when ready, rice absorbs excess grease. smoked sausage keeps for a pretty long time for short trips and the grease released when cooked will make the mushrooms moist and prevent sticking.

throw a dab of cajun seasoning into the pan while meat/mushrooms are cooking and another on the medley when ready to eat.

Sisla'gwa'taqan (siss-laa-gwa-tah-gan) not to be confused with Luskinikn, at least in my family, are the best fucking johnnycakes or corn pancakes.

You take yellow corn meal, the fine stuff, and mix it in a 1 to 1 ratio with boiling water (1 cup meal 1 cup water). In the dry corn meal before the water you include like a pinch of baking powder if you have it, though you dont need it, a tablespoon of oil or melted pork fat, salt (not if you use saltpork fat), and a tablespoon of sugar or maple syrup. You let that sit like 5 minutes and the corn meal expands and gets soft like grits. Then stir in milk (or water) until its pancake batter thickness and fry in a hot hot skillet with no shy amount of fat of your choosing (i like butter or saltpork fat)

The outside is crispy golden and caramelized, and the inside is soft gooey grits.

Have that shit with some fayots au lard or bacon, goddamn

I enjoy hardtack and beef jerky. Soak the hardtack in some chicken broth and it's very tasty. A good late night snack that I eat often when not out too. I just really enjoy it, and it makes me full even though I'm a big eater. Drink the broth and wash the saltiness away with a good cup of water.

I can easily clean up the most putrid swamp water; prefilter heavy denim funnel, refilter with new coffee filters a few times, filter yet again a couple times with a 1 or 2 micron ceramic filter, treat for that amount of water with the correct amount of household bleach for the correct amount of time and then hard boil for at least ten minutes. If you want you can use a pressure canner pot to kill 99.9999% of organic nastys..cleanest water you will ever drink in your life.
As far as toxins remaining, you're kidding yourself if you think your not breathing and eating more in a couple days of city life most anywhere than you would get drinking hundreds of gallons of water I cleaned up. Stop exaggerating or being over dramatic anon.

what i do for seasonings, every time i go to a mcdonalds or wherever (my school's cafeteria) i just grab a handful of ketchup packets. ive got salt pepper ketchup mayo mustard hot sauce all that shit. and then its in a zip lock bag with an extra lighter and extra matches and i just toss it in my mess kit. highly recommend.

pancake syrup, table syrup, and maple pancake syrup can all be corn syrip

but if its labeled as "maple syrup" and accompanied by a grade, it can only be maple syrup.

And if it says "100% massachusetts Maple Syrup" or "100% someplace maple syrup" it needs to be blenede from only tree stands primarily in that state.

However on the borders you get timber holdings that cross borders, but as long as the address of that farm and most of its land is in the state the Ag bureau usually lets them still call it 100%
