I think after watching this movie a lot of people come away with the wrong idea/message. The whole point was one of the very last lines of the movie that was something along the lines of "happiness is only real when shared with others". He only really enjoyed the time he'd spent with people along the way; whenever he was alone he was having the shit beaten out of him or dying of starvation. Those are just my thoughts anyway. But yeah it was a good movie and I can see why you would find it inspiring OP; I did as well, it just inspired me to learn a bit more and not put myself at risk from starvation

Well, allright, it is certainly inspiring, agree. And I think the best lesson to learn here is learning outdoor skills and think a bit more about solitude. Would u really be happy when u re all alone for enough too long days? I certainly wouldn't.

The fact that he survived alone for more than four months in the Alaskan bush with minimal supplies or preparation is impressive to me. I share a lot of McCandless's sentiments, but definitely see the consequences of his actions as more of a cautionary tale than one I'd like to follow piece-by-piece. As he said, "happiness is only real when shared", and being with a group of people out in the wild would significantly lessen anyone's odds of dying from starvation.

As an Alaskan, I think that McCandless's story epitomizes the dangers behind having a romanticized view of the world.

It also shows that mental illness can shorten life expectancy.

Nonetheless, it remains a valid cautionary tale. Both technically (don't go unprepared into the wild) and emotionally (happiness is best shared with others.)

If you guys still think that living alone in Alaska is the new shangri-la (it isn't), then look up Dick Proenneke. He is truly inspiring.

He thought you could vacation in the Alaskan bush with zero knowledge or skill and walk back out like a hotel resort program. And yes, he did plan on coming back.

I do not know where you live, but I experienced the complete opposite. When I went /out/ for an extended period of time, the people back home reacted as if I molested a child. And I was only gone for 15 months, supporting myself with honest jobs along the way. It was not like I had become a permanent beggar bum.

His mistake wasn't going into the woods alone. His mistake was going unprepared. The river he couldn't cross had a bridge 1/2 a mile down the river. If he had updated maps he'd have done better. He just bought some gear and went into the woods. He didn't explore his spot, build anything he'd need nor did he know how to fish or trap. If he had prepared, he'd have lived and had one hell of a story to tell back home. But he didn't.

Regarding mccandless most of the Alaskans I met up there knew of lots of crazy dudes who show up every summer unprepared and wanting test themselves. The difference is he died on a pretty well used trail so he was eventually found. There are certainly more out there that haven't and may never be found.
