Literally just start hiking down the road and you will eventually get into the woods.

Start with basic Walmart essential gear. Just get a $10 back pack and stuff it full of water bottles and food with a change of clothing and a cheap pair of binoculars.

Contrary to what some on /out/ say, you don't need a grand worth of gear that most of them literally never take out of its packaging.

I find that my most enjoyable times outdoors are on my bicycle with minimal gear.

You don't need fancy equipment tbh. As long as your shoes don't slip and don't give you blisters thats good.

a $2 PVC ponch would be better at keeping you dry than any rain jacket.

Just go more 'survival' camping than glamour camping lol

I like watching people from a distance when I'm out. Observe them for a bit to make sure they aren't a threat. It makes me feel more comfortable and helps put my mind at ease.

I used to be into birding, so I have some pretty good pairs. Nowadays, I carry them because I enjoy scanning distant peaks and such. My vision isn't that great either.

Shit adds up quick. I dropped over $1,500 on my camping gear.

When your tent is $400, sleeping pad is $120, quick drying clothes $100+, stove (fancy one) $100, shoes $130, food $100+, battery charger $100+, bear spray $45 and so forth shit adds up quick.

I was in a similar spot for years. Garage sales, thrift shops, blowout sales and army surplus were my best friends.

Pack, boots, and much of my gear came out of surplus stores and online sites, found my trusty tent for 5 bucks at a garage sale, knife came from the local hardware store going out of business. Hell, I found my best cast iron pan on an abandoned property.

Just keep your eyes open, it takes a little time but be wary of local sales and you'll be set!

And wat? Sleeping pad? Quick dry clothes? STOVE? None of these are needed and honestly they add up weight and uneeded costs.

As far as I'm concerned the most expensive item should be shoes or boots. Used get you by but that should be the first upgrade. If you go for leather boots grab some boot oil if they're leather, should only be about 10 bucks. AND TAKE CARE OF THEM. Mine are going on five years.

And food should not cost so much. Instant pancake mix, powdered milk, cheat meat and cheese isn't $130...

I made a stove from two soda cans and it works fine. A yoga mat makes an alright sleeping pad for me.

I need a lighter tent than the one I have but I'm broke as fuck and am having no luck at thrift stores.

Surplus gets a bad rap that isn't totally undeserved around here. It's heavy, used and the properties of blending in with the environment can be a disadvantage if you get into trouble and want to be found (I bring a glow vest just in case but it's probably overkill) but they are very solid for the price, provided you don't get a bad example.

The coats and tents are the best values with underlayers probably being better sought on the civilian market. Shop around the web if there isn't a surplus store near you Keep Shooting, Sportsman's Guide, Fleet Farm ect. ect are all good sites.

Go to your local thrift stores and search the racks thoroughly, you'd be surprised how many expensive hiking brand clothing ends up there. I have found a LL Bean down vest, a Patagonia fleece vest, a Smartwool baselayer, and other stuff.

In general though, you could go to your local thrift store with $20 and walk away the essentials:

2 poly shirts
1 wool sweater
1 thick fleece
1 zip off poly pants

Sometimes at thrift stores you'll even find backpacks and Nalgene water bottles. Thrift stores are the best place to look if your $$$ concious.
