I was told that I should come here with my question.

What cameras do you use?

I was wanting a digital that could withstand high temperatures, light shocks and maybe a little dust or water. I would also like for it to use AA batteries.

I want to be able to leave it in the car without worrying about it.

What are /out/ approved cameras?

I have a Pentax K-50. A Pentax is what you want, because it's basically the only camera at its price point that can be rained on and dropped in the dirt because the weather sealing is fucking amazing. Check youtube and such, there are videos of people washing dirt off their Pentaxes in the shower. Not to mention it's a fucking great camera. I love mine, 10/10 for me.

I have the white one but they come in like 50 different colors. Pentax doesn't afraid of anything.

I was liking the Pentax.
The companies I liked were Pentax, Canon and Panasonic.

How does the K-50 hold up to heat?

Are all Pentax cameras made in the Philippines?

idunno, i've not had a problem. it's sposta be more tolerant to extremes than other cameras in the $400-$800 range though.

I was just wondering because I had a Canon A710IS and if I left it out in the car, even in the glove compartment, the CMOS would overheat and most OS features no longer worked until it cooled and that was a problem.

It also died after a few sprinkles of water; that was after I kept it in rice for a day and it still won't work.

AA batteries are only used in super-cheap point and shoots these days.

Or get a pro-grade DSLR with a weather sealed body. But those aren't cheap, and they sure as hell don't run on AAs.

they are professional grade cameras with good weather sealing, solid magnesium bodies, and enough temperature resistance to survive journalist use in the middle east.

to run them off of AA batteries, you'll need to buy a vertical grip. these are typically designed to accommodate either 2 of the normal lithium batteries, or ~6 AA batteries.

of course, to complete the weather sealing, you'll need to buy weather sealed lenses.

finally, I'm sure that the other major camera manufacturers such as nikon, sony and pentax make similar equipment.

If the former, then any weather-sealed dslr will do. Alternatively, you might benefit from the compact size of a mirrorless camera like the Fuji XT-1 (weather-sealed), etc.

If you don't care about that aspect of photography, then any old weatherproof point and shoot will do.

2xAA's. 7mp. Bought it for about $50 on ebay.
Manual/A/S modes, up to 30sec exposure. Program mode for more automatic pointy-and-shooty operation. So you get more than the cheap-P&S features, without needing all the bulk of a DSLR.

I've got a DSLR too. Takes great shots, but that ends up being a shitload of stuff to haul around in the mountains, where the H5 is inexpensive, lightweight, and still takes pretty decent photos. I still take the Nikon with when I go out primarily to shoot.

It's put on a ton of miles on my snowmobile and in my motorcycle pack. Occasional splashes or drops in the snow isn't a big deal. I'd say it's "tough enough".

My SX130 does, basically a big point and shoot (a bit bigger than the A710) with a really good zoom. Pictures are good enough to print 16x20 and exhibit. The latest model (SX170) takes proprietary batteries though so I should probably get an old stock one as a backup while there are still some available. I just put it in a small pelican case when I'm kayaking.

There's also things like picture related.

Though some compact cameras are pretty good. The difference between my friends' Panasonic DMC-TZ10 and Pentax Optio WS80 is already pretty huge (The Panasonic is better).

My advice would be to consider very well how much weight you're willing to carry, and how much image quality you're willing to sacrifice for less weight. Also, think about a price range.
If you have that information, do some research on a couple of cameras.
Things to look out for:
>image quality
>high ISO performance
>battery life
>can you shoot RAW (big plus! some canon compact cameras can shoot RAW with custom firmware IIRC)
>manual mode

And because when Canon switched from AAs in the SX560 to proprietary batteries for the SX570 the shots per charge actually went down.

Unless you're focused exclusively on camera size (which means you've also given up on image quality) they're better for /out/ point and shoots. Just not fashionable.

I use Canon 6D personally and think it's a great camera. Without wanting to sound like a complete jackass, I'm a photographer by trade and have managed photo equipment rental shops in the past etc

You can get a battery grip to run AAs if you like, but I just bring an extra battery if it were a weekend trip

Couple it with a 40mm pancake ($150 lol) and you've got a rugged camera with professional quality files at a barely-larger size than "bridge" cameras.

And as far as DSLRs go, it's cheap enough that I don't worry about it when /out/ or whatever. It's my bang around camera.
I often use (dont own) a 1dx on shoots which would be the best of the best for nature photographers etc, but honestly even if money were no issue, it's too heavy and large

The other DSLR suggestions are all good, and you can't really go wrong with pentax, canon, nikon or olympus at that kind of level. Particularly with where the technology is at now, there is just so much camera crammed into these things.

I haven't tried the OMD but an OM1 was my first real SLR (I still have it) and it is imo a perfect camera. I imagine the OMD to be fantastic

For point and shoot I agree with the olympus tough series. I had an older version and put it through absolute hell underwater and shit. Great little camera.

An even smaller one that gives you full control is the Canon S120. Great camera if you don't mind a small sensor.

Yeah i've given up trying to find something that works well in every situation. Now I have the LX7 as a main camera, a G2 and a few manual lenses for the more artsy stuff, and an old FX7 for when destroying/losing the camera is likely. That combination seems to work really well, Panasonic makes great cameras.

I don't see myself going back to an SLR anytime soon.

So this might be a little bit different than the usual gear question but whats a good waterproof(!) container I could fit a point & shoot into? Something that will fit a Sony RX100 or Ricoh GR. Preferably it would be able to fit an extra battery or maybe even the battery charger as well?

I have this plastic container with a rubber gasket and clamp-down enclosure right now but I have a feeling trying to fit an RX100 or GR into it wouldn't quite work.

cameras, radio gear, test equipment... while the cases may seem "expensive", consider what you're putting inside it.

Look around for them on craigslist, I got about half of mine for free.... bought two 1650's (big one on teh bottom), one 1600 (next smaller black one) and two big totes (about $50/ea) for $200 .... sold one of the 1650's for $200 on ebay...

I've always been afraid of destroying electronics because of water, but I've never had it happen. Countless Kajaking trips, hiking in bad weather, getting all my stuff soaked... the camera always survived.
Get a good camera pouch with a zipper that closes up all the way. It'll keep all the water out unless you submerge it. Maybe bring an extra ziploc bag if you're worried.

Having to fumble around with a case every time you wanna take a picture will probably get on your nerves pretty quick. If it doesn't, the rattling sure will.
