>>559415I'm not that guy, but ive fished frogs quite a bit. Besides frog colored hard baits, theres hollow body walking frogs, hollow body buzz frogs, and soft plastic buzz frogs. I've seen some hollow body popping frogs too, but ive never used one. Booyah and Spro make good walking frogs. My favorite buzz frog is a Scum Frog Bigfoot.
Hollow body frogs are hard to beat in thick surface vegetation. Lily pads, grass, reeds, etc. In ideal frog water, you should be hauling in at least a pound of salad with every fish. If youre fishing open water and you want a froggy lure, just use a frog colored hard bait like a spook or a sammy because you miss a few hookups with the hollow body frogs. Walking frogs usually work better in clearer water while buzz frogs work better in water with some color.
Dont be throwing frogs on your dropshot rod. You want a heavy rod and heavy braid to horse in the fish and cut through the weeds. I use a 7 foot med hvy baitcasting rod and 30 lb braid. Heavier rods and 50-80lb line is commonly used, especially down south.
As for the retrieve, just cast the frog right into the slop and either walk it back or just reel it if youre using a buzz frog. If you want you can give it a pause at the edge of the weeds, but sometimes its better to just keep it moving.
Frogs bring in a lot of big fish late spring through summer. My personal best frog fish was about 5 lbs, but ive seen plenty of pictures of 6s, 7s, 8s, caught on frogs. The fish fucking attack these things too. Its a blast. Definitely give them a try if you fish water with lots of weeds.
