Depends on where you live, if your a uk bro, alder, yew, birch, silver birch, apple, sycamore are great. If your a us bro, sycamore, orange, magnolia, hickory, apple, and many others are great.

Preaty much any non-conifer will do, i perfer softer woods though because they are easy to work with.

If your using a soft wood, use a filler oil like linseed oil to harden it up after you finnish.

Osage Orange (Bois d'Arc) if you want it to last forever. But it's a pain in the ass to carve because it's tough as shit.
Birch looks pretty cool with a light coat of oil on it.
Hazelnut is also a great wood.

I would be willing to bet that Florida has osage orange. I grew up in East Texas and it's very dominated by pine and palmetto flats and every once in a while I found an osage orange.

Yep looks like it is native to some areas of FL and is likely to grow anywhere in the state. The easiest way to ID it (IMO) is the huge "green orange" shaped seed pods it drops.

Well I cut down and cut up trees on a daily basis so I come across a lot of them. I'm not just sure hat the best way to go about harvesting them from a tree would be without felling it and cutting them out in slabs with a chainsaw either tbh.

Scotland here btw, so don;t give up hope as far as them being non existent in Europe,

I wouldn't mind cutting down a young tree to get a burl... if it's too small to be cut off without cutting down the whole tree.

I just went up to a really dense young birch area... just to find out they cut them all down. These bastards... huge piles of birch trees everywhere, there must have been thousands. All about 3-6 inches diameter. Not a single burl.

Hmm, I think the best ones I've found have been on more mature birch. It's weird, you'll see none and then all of a sudden you're come across a tree that's covered in them or that has one huge one around the hole truck like life ring.

Do be careful cutting them off living trees though, especially if it's a larger burl, if you damage the cambium layer badly enough you can kill the tree.

Suppose there would be no harm in having a hunt through the thousands of you ones that have been harvested. If you can maybe get friendly with a few of the guys driving the timber trucks? If they see any nice ones they might leave them to the side for you so you have time to spot them and cut them off. Keep hunting Anon, I'd send you some if I could!

Get a fixed blade knife with a scandi grind (Mora is fine) and a Mora spoon knife. A small axe/hatchet is useful to cut bigger pieces down to size, so is a folding saw.

Carving something concave (spoon, bowl, ...) is a pain in the ass with a normal knife. Do yourself a favour and spend the 20 bucks to get a spoon knife. It'll last you a lifetime.

If anybody itt goes with the Mora spoon knife, they benefit from a regrind before sharpening (which they require straight from the box) and you could also save a little hassle by rounding off the pointed tip.

What's a good tool to get started with?

Specifically what are the differences, and which radius should I go for? The ones I have seen range from 15-25mm radius, and they go for 25-70 monies. There's even a North American native design where both sides are sharpened.

I guess I'll mostly carve out things in the dimensions of spoons.

And what is always best in these cases: Have you had bad experiences with hook knifes you could learn something from?

Nah, it's a pretty common misconception. I'm sure I heard somebody explain once that what you're referring to as a crook knife should actually be called something totally different as a crook knife and as you rightly point out a hook knife are two different things. Besides, I don't think Mears ever spent as much time carving trinkets as you might think, certainly not in any of the TC shows.

I know the hook knife which Mears lobs around to make spoons, and I know the crooked knife which often has a straight blade because crooked describes the angle to the tang.

How to into carving? I would like to start getting into it for artistic purposes. I normally make music and write poetry, but I feel that those are inadequate mediums to express the inspiration that I get from traditional mythologies and religions.

How far can I get with just a regular knife (pic related is the one I have)? At what point will it be necessary to get an actual carving set, if not immediately? And also, where should I start to get good? I've been thinking about carving a tobacco pipe as a starter, since it doesn't seem like something too difficult, but I'm not sure. The only things I've ever crafted out of wood before are walking sticks.

And another question: is it worth it to buy wood, or am I better off using whatever I find in the woods?

I would recommend buying a mora classic no 2/0 and a mora frost spoon knife as a bare bones starter kit. Those are both inexpensive. If you can only afford one at a time, get the no2/0 first. The knife you have is not ideal for carving for a number of reasons. It can be done but investing in purpose made carving knives or at least a small scandi ground blade would be very beneficial.
Start carving small things like spoons and just work on making them more and more intricate. A pipe would be a good first project but difficult unless you have proper carving knives.
Just use wood that you find.

Thanks for the advice. What are some of the reasons why my knife isn't good for carving? I've had it for a long time and used it for whittling, but I don't think I've ever known what it was designed for.

Also, what kind of knives would be an ideal set for carving a pipe if I were to do so?

Serrations right where you want to make push cuts. The grind and blade shape isn't ideal either but that's less of a problem.

Serrated blades are not for cutting wood. They skid along the surface and cut unevenly through multiple rings. They are for hide, rope, and other tough soft stuff.

Another problem with carving is that a carving knife is often driven with great force in power cuts. And a saw is never used with great force because it has very dangerous little spikes on the blade.
