Trekking in up state NY.

Hey /out/. I am an exchange student and i will be attending cornell uni for 6 months this fall. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice regarding trekking in NY.

What is allowed? In sweden (where i normally go) i can walk in private forests and sleep there (if i dont leave anything behind).

That site has all the info you need for camping primative.

NY is beautiful. There are lots of state parks close to Ithaca, where Cornell is. Robert Treeman is close and very nice. Letchworth State park is a little bit more of a drive, but definitely worth it. Just 30 min away is Watkins Glen state park, gorgeous, but sometimes crowded and not very /out (it basically in town, but beautiful, pic related).

If you want to be REALLY outdoors, Adirondack park covers a huge area of NY, it's bigger than Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier, and Great Smokey Mountains Nationals parks COMBINED.

Another option is to head towards Pennsylvania. The Allegheny National forest is on the NY/pennsylvania state line and covers a large area. The Allegheny resivoir is there and is awesome fishing.

Another hidden gem is Pennsylvania is the Hammersley Wild area. The largest area in the state with no roads. Near the middle is the Hammersley Pool, a cold water swimming spot miles from civilization. Backpacker magazine said it was one of the 3 best swimming holes in the Country. It's a nice hike too (maybe 12 miles round trip).

I live on the PA/NY border not far from Ithaca (near Binghamton) spend a lot of time outdoors myself.

Definitely look into the Adirondacks. Awesome area, very /out/.

If you're into kayaking or canoeing, they have an area called the St. Regis Canoe area. It's a big area dedicated to kayak and canoe activies, all kinds of cool lakes and ponds with easy portage.

Mt Marcy is an awesome climb/hike.

The Saranac Lake area is cool, awesome kayaking.

I live in Upstate NY (Rochester/Geneseo) and I do most of my trekking in the finger lakes. Parrish Glenn/High Tur is a good one, especially if you like to climb etc. Letchworth Park is cool, especially the lesser-known, more untamed side of the gorge. Finger Lakes Trail is alright.

But I second Watkins glen and letchworth for day hiking.

The Alleghenies are great too; if you're willing to go up to ADK they're worth going in the other direction for.

Heading to ADK tomorrow; Canada Lakes region.

I'm actually transferring to Cornell this fall. There's some hiking going on during orientation. There's even some multi-day backpacking trips for the summer. I don't know if you have access to that stuff, but maybe searching around the site will yield something. I'd definitely try and talk to some of the hiking clubs while you're there, they'd be the best resources.

I live in western NY, and most of the hiking I do is along creek beds, because they're technically state owned. You're not really going to get away with going onto people's properties. There are a few nice state parks near Ithaca, if I remember correctly.

How safe is the parking in the adirondacks? My plan is to drive down, park my car, hike to the top of marcy and stay the night, hike back.

my bike is pretty expensive and most of my valuables will be in the car (laptop, etc.). How safe will everything be?

As a general rule, relatively safe. However, there's an off chance that some loser creeper could take your stuff. Can happen anywhere.

It's probably much safer than leaving that same car in a city, but still there's a risk. Lock the car, and hide the valuables from sight. Consider locking the bike in the car (by taking off the front wheel). If you must, leave it on the roof but add a secondary lock that can't be cut easily. Also, parking by many other cars can help. Theives want to be by themselves as they steal stuff, if people are around, it's less likely.
