Don't get too caught up in the whole "survival" thing. It's trendy now, but real outdoor people don't really get all jacked up on the survival stuff.
I don't know your area so I can't comment on that.
If you're just getting started, just collect a few things, and go camping. Its easy. Just find a friend with some land. Get a few other friends, and go innawoods.
You'll need:
tent
sleeping bag
flashlight
some food
water
That's all you need to start. Don't worry about crazy survival stuff, huge knives, and bushcraft knots.... you can add things as you go, but just starting out you don't need much if you're just on a small piece of land.
Another option is to just go to state parks and hike. Get a backpack (any will do) bring some water, some snacks, wear good shoes, and go hike all day. It's fun just to explore state parks.
Again. Don't worry about survival... it's over rated. Most survival situations are absolute misery. Cold, hungry, tired, and sick. Being innawoods should be none of those (except maybe tired after a long hike).
