Hey guys,
Im going for a 2 days walk.

I have to attach my sleeping bag to my backpack. How would you recommend it? On top or on bottom?

Hiked a week with the same stuff one year ago, strapped it on top with elastics but this time I'm going to use backpack clips as a permanent and more user friendly solution.

Attached a custom hipbelt on it and I'm happy with it. Told you I used the same backpack for a week hike. It's fine.

I just want to know if attaching something on the bottom is going to bump into my legs, or pull my posture backwards.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of both ways of attaching?

You really don't want to put your sleeping bag outside the pack. It'll get wet and torn and all kinds of fucked up. Think about what you're going to do whenever you want to take a break and feel like taking your pack off for a few minutes, your bag is going to hit the ground.

i always put the heaviest stuff on top, i find that more comfortably, so it depends on what else you're bringing. and i hate stuff that hangs on low. if there's room, put it on top imo.

Everything always goes inside the backpack, aside from my sleep mat in a dry bag and my waterproof jacket on the outside for fast access. From bottom to top my pack goes;

Main compartment
>Hydration bladder in its compartment
>Tent & groundsheet folded in the bottom
>Poles & pegs down each side against the internal frame
>Sleeping bag
>Secondary clothes in dry sack
>Food, cookset & first aid kit
>Mid-layer fleece jacket & waterproof overtrousers

Lid Compartments
>Kindle and/or tablet in dry sack
>Toilet roll
>Fire kit
>Water purification
>Fixed blade knife
>Folding Saw
>Torch
>Headlamp
>Batteries
>Maps

Right Hip Belt Pocket
>Phone
>Power bank & cable

Left Hip Belt Pocket

>Paracord

Op i'd get a bigger bag. I fit all of this in a 36 litre pack with enough food for two days, but I think most people would advise a 50 litre pack.

When stuff can move about it creates a pendulum kind of effect which can knock you off balance, pull you backwards/downwards and make you work harder than you need to to counteract the sway. Everything in your pack should stay put and be as close to your body/center of gravity as possible and your pack should high up on your back. Packs have so many outer compression straps for good reason.

Attaching it to the top is the better option of the two you posted if you have to have it on the outside, though it's really not ideal. Underneath your bag it wlll constantly knock against your legs and annoy the shit out of you.

My sleeping bag is rolled inside a bivy bag, so that's not an issue.

Thanks for the advice, put it on top. Sew clips to the shoulder straps and to the bivy bag. Love how easy I can now just drop it now. Last year was such a hassle with the elastic straps.

Okay. But did you eva eva eva... wear a modern climbing backpack? light, highly ergonomic.

they feel like a wonderfully duvet. and they offer enough space for your sleeping bag. you neva eva again will look like a douche.

Heavy stuff up high. Lighter at the bottom. Try both and walk a bit of you need to. Use a decent stuff sack and your bag will be fine. Every external frame ever had the bag stored on the bottom outside the bag. Just user common sense and you'll be ok.
