Anyone here try their hand at metal detecting?
I always wanted to try but I've always been kind of iffy on taking the plunge.

What's a good detector for a starter? Any tips?
I know nothing about the hobby, but I would love to start.

I've just gone around my backyard and found lost arrows, bottle caps and random stuff; a crazy guy used to live in my house, so there's lots of buried junk around still. Not gonna lie, its pretty fun finding stuff that I've walked over a hundred times not knowing it was there.

When I was a kid a friend had the remains of an old homestead in his backyard. We used his metal detector to find old silverware, hardware and tools, nothing fantastic though. I've been thinking about taking my detector to a beach or something somewhere and trying to find some stuff that's actually worth something

It has been useful finding buried water valves and subsurface electrical wires and shit since then though.

Beaches are classic because beach vacationers lose shit all the time. Rivers sometimes depending on local history. Old factory and business locations because expensive shit gets left behind in the mud, must run from failing business.

Hunt(yes, hunt) for metal you want in locations people regularly lose shit and can't find it without a detector. IE brush/tall grass, sand/trash,etc.

Don't forget a shovel, bucket, and screen to help filter the crud from the gold.

Well OP, I live in an old mining town in the Colorado Rockies. Lots of old stuff to find here, but I try to find coins and saloon tokens. Some of those old tokens from ghost towns are worth more than their weight in gold.

So I started off when I was 14 with a Radio Shack VLF detector that cost $50 US. I had fun with it and found a handful of coins. I decided to upgrade, so I bought a White's Coinmaster used for $500. I wasn't finding much with it, so 5 years later I bought a Garret gold detector for a few hundred. That didn't really find much so I got a fancy computerized Bounty Hunter for $400. I used that for 10 years and never found a coin with it. So I decided for fun to haul out my old Radio Shack detector that had been gathering dust for 25 years (yes, I'm an old fart).

First day out with that kid's toy from Radio Shack I find a silver dime and two saloon tokens. More than I'd found with all the other high-dollar detectors combined. So I started going over all the places I'd already detected. These are places where hundreds of people detect, most of them with absurdly expensive detectors....

In the last two years of combing the spots I've already detected, the places where other people have spent days finding nothing, I picked up 26 saloon tokens and more old coins than I can count. A handful of gold rings and jewelry as well. Not to mention hundreds of antique bullet shells and buckets full of miscellaneous brass and silver artifacts of various sorts.

moral of the story - if there is one - sometimes the cheap, simple detectors are best. Learn how to use your machine instead of trusting a computer to do it for you. Best of luck!

But know historical landmarks are protected atleast in my country. You arent allow to dig or search there without a permit, which you wont get.
But if there isnt something protected nearby you can search and discover new sites which could be examined in the future when they are lucky.
Most of the time nobody cares about those landmarks. They just get demolished whitout a archaeologists took a single look at them. Reason no money, manpower and time.

You have to do the same thing in Bavaria theorically. Just because they dont have any time you can just build it anyway without any examination.
The big red marked area in the pic is a settlement + gravefield dated 1300 till 800 b.c. and several artifacts from 45000 till 9500 b.c. Some company is mining there sand and all the artifacts are fucked.

You only need to have your construction site surveyed by an archaeologist if there is any kind government funding involved. If there is not, you still have to hire one if you stumble across anything. no one does this if they don't have to though because there is no kind of oversight that would force construction companies to do so.

Essentially true, though there are plenty of examples of metal detecting clubs working with archaeologists to find artifacts for museums and study.

most detectorists hunt things that have no archaeological value. Rings on beaches and loose change in parks. Perhaps the occasional old coin when someone digs up the streets.

we also are the top amateur archaeologists. Many of us dedicate the entire off season to hunting libraries and government files to track down the history of our finds. Our relationship with archaeology usually starts off bad and evolves towards cooperation.

in the US anyways. But as others here have pointed out we don't really have any pre-Columbian metal artifacts to fuck up here.

I am going on a massive road trip this fall and will over a lot of ground.

don't pay more than 300~400$ on your first one. reading specialized forums will make you think you won't find shit if you don't have less than a grand of equipment, but it's bullshit. most of what you dig up is really close to the surface and any decent detector would pick it up.

source: been doing it for 4 years with a mid price Tesoro. found dozens of coins and artifacts from all eras in fields and woods around my house. im in europe though not sure i would be as interested to do it in the states since im personnaly mostly fond of the roman/medieval stuff.

Old silver coins in trashy areas (my thing) you will need a good machine to weed out iron junk. E-TRAC, CTX 3030, XP Deus. You are going to suffer big time trying to get old silver coins with a cheap detector.

If you want modern coins / jewelry you can get a cheaper machine and dig everything. A Fisher F2 - F5 or Delta would do the trick nicely. Stay in areas without too much trash. Soccer fields, tot lots, school fields are OK. Picnic grounds can be really exhausting with all the trash.

The last option would be a water-proof machine. IMO the most successful gold hunters are water hunters. The AT Pro seems like a good choice for this type of hunting.

Gold is very difficult to find in trashy areas. It shares the same conductive range as aluminum so no machine can really tell gold from aluminum.

All I find is some modern coinage and got a nice silver R1 an ounce of silver.

We had gold coinage but for a brief period so no real chance of finding a gold coin but they also were minted in ounces and half ounces.

Just fyi if the historical site is not listed and you have permission to hunt on it even in europe it means that NO one cares about the site and see little to no value to it. I studies geography and had to help find potencial sites in europe for a extra credit.

That detector is suitable for hitting clean areas like sports fields or school grounds. It does a terrible job with flat iron objects. What this means is that every flat steel bottle cap is going to sound like copper or silver. That's why its only suitable for clean areas.

Also, it goes on sale for 100 at crappy tire I do believe. I'd try to get an F2 or a lower model Garrett or Technetics.

Bounty Hunter is not a serious company and all their stuff is garbage.

It is suitable for clean areas and its not a bad price I guess. I doubt you will find any silver coins with it. And you wont be able to tolerate a place littered with beer caps like the beach or picnic areas. But if you are after jewelry, modern coins etc, it will be fine. Go hit the soccer fields by the Pickering nuke plant. Real clean ground and a great way to learn your machine.

You can always just sell it if you don't like it. You'll probably find that you need a pin-pointer too which is another $100 little dildo lookin thing. Otherwise its hard recovering a little dirt coloured mud covered piece of metal out of the dirt.
