Are packs like the Marmot Ultra Kompressor worth the cost? They don't look like they can hold up to use harder than light trotting through the woods.

These bags are not ment for standing up to hard use. Hard use like you would find in a bag that has 500-1000D nylon. these bags are made to be comfortable while hiking on trails.

Thats what they do best, and thats what I use my osprey talon 22 for. And yes they are worth the cost. They are unbelievably comfy.

My friend has that pack, and he loves it. I was looking at the Marmot with the thought that it only has a foam frame so it holds the possibility to lay flat in a larger rucksack.

If you want a good, lightweight day/summit/biking/whatever pack that won't break the bank I recommend the REI Flash 18 (or the 22).

It's simple, versatile and actually very durable, I know people who have put their Flash 18 through several years of hard use and they're holding up just fine.

Looks can be deceiving.

Denier =/= tensile strength. It is just a measurement of fiber weight, strength and durability is determined by the actual material composition of the fiber.

A pair of 500 denier lycra tights are not stronger or more durable than a 70 denier laminated rip stop backpack just because the fibers are thicker.

I've actually got one of both (they gave me one at REI as an employee gift one year) I mostly use it for carrying lunch around but it does get some hiking use.

When I was pack fitting at REI I didn't see too many coming back with broken straps, most of my customers seemed pretty happy with it.

You do have a year to return or exchange it if you're not happy with it.
