I want to get into deer hunting and I'm planning to buy a rifle. I have ~700 to blow.

Seeing all those hilarious fail death stories in the first kill thread make me want something with the highest chance of a clean death.

Also where can I find resources for new hunters?

And yes I do have experience hunting and processing small game and relatively extensive experience in the outdoors.

12-Gauge isn't the best choice for deer, slugs reach subsonic velocity much quicker than bullets, and sabot slugs can be comparatively expensive--but a shotgun can serve as a versatile platform if you decide you want to hunt larger game, or if you go the other way and want to hunt waterfowl.

I believe Remington still distributes an 870 Magnum Express that comes with a 20-inch rifled-choke barrel with basic rifle sights and a 26-inch improved-modified choke barrel. Might be worth looking into?

I'm a fan of the .270, but as another poster said the .308 is a good choice as well. Basically anything in this class is splitting hairs, be it the .308 the .270 or the 30-06. but basically anything from .243 to 45-70 is good for deer. Right now .223 and .308 can be a bit difficult to find though. But by deer season, I'm hoping it's situation normal.

My advice is first practice on a range. Get a target that shows the vitals, hit it every time. Can always start small as well with a shotgun and go small game hunting.

IF you did all of these right, then you now have a dead deer in front of you, say a prayer and thank the deer for its sacrifice to your need of food. Unless you hunt for sport you sick fuck. Flied clean and take to a check station, or you can check it in online in some states. Skin it and keep the hide for leather, and and cut as you would like.

When it comes to deer rifles, they typically aren't cheap to shoot. Something like an SKS or AK can be used to take deer and, present ammo scare not counted, fairly cheap to shoot
But stuff like the .270, .243 etc are a tad on the expensive side for plinking.

Best resource for new hunters is your local (LOCAL, not chain) hunting/gun/pro shop. Look into somewhere nearby that sells firearms and talk to the guys. They'll have the skinny on local laws, hunting seasons, and the kinds of guns that fit your price range.

Look into package rifles from Savage, Remington, or CZ for good starting points.

Thanks. I know how to shoot, but what comes after the shot is what I'm worried about.
I imagine it would be pretty difficult to nt spoil the meat if you've never cleaned one before.

But please, if you're going to go play 20 questions with them, when you make whatever purchases connected to hunting, try to make it through them. Support those local stores, don't ask them a dozen questions and go buy your rifle at a big box store to save $20. It's really worth keeping those stores around. I'm not saying buy everything from them, but do support them through some purchases.

Local stores usually have better selection, because they're willing to hit up their suppliers for more info and really dig. I have a Savage 16FLHSS in .308, which is pretty much the perfect rifle for me, and the guy spent 20 minutes checking supplier webpages to see if he could find one. At Bass Pro or Academy I'd have ended up with something much less preferable.

It's very easy to not spoil it if you're calm. You "unzip" the stomach, don't think of cutting it. Even if you pop the bladder or intestine the meat isn't ruined, wash it good etc. There are videos online showing how to do it.

Op, cleaning is not nearly as hard as it seems. If I were you I would pick up some lamb primal cut charts, deer are almost identical. When opening the body cavity point the knife out and use your hands to push back the gut sack. I use a carabiner to hang my large game a slit between the leg bones and the Achilles tendon is where I put the carabiner. I then take it a bit further than most people. I like to Break my game down to primal cuts in the field and then wrap each one in cheese cloth. I save the carcass to be scraped clean as well. I do all my own butchering. I learned by cooking for a living, but I would love to pass my knowledge on.

no, I don't think I would. I went on my first hunting trip at age 4. I've been tagging along and setting up camp since then. I've taken several deer and elk. I've dealt with all sorts of hunters. Keep in mind you're the guy that just suggested this young man make a spear gun and take "some hunter guy" with him to learn to field dress.

This would be good info if this were a bow hunting thread. Bow hunting is difficult and is not for the first time big game hunter with no bow experience at all. I'm sure this guy knows that bows exist. He's looking for a rifle. Even worse would be bow hunting for big game, his first time with a homemade bow

Yes, biggest part of cleaning big game is get your hands in there. And I've only had to quarter a bear, I usually drag deer out and do it at home. It's much better doing the butchering yourself though.

A lot of things about deer hunting are a bit straining; the boredom of sitting in a stand, how frustrating it can be to develop your tracking skills. All these things just seem to get a little harder when carrying a rifle. Maybe it's just me, but my first few hunts, just the eagerness and anxiety of not fucking up my first kill made everything a bit more disorienting. Then again, I was also a twitchy teenager then.

My suggestion for a first time deer rifle would be a used but good condition savage 110 in 30-06. They are cheap and accurate and plentiful. 30-06 because it is versatile and common and very affordable ammo can be found. Even in the current ammo crisis.

The used ones don't usually have the AccuTrigger, though. Make sure it has one, because I have an pre-AccuTrigger .22 rifle and it it's like squeezing dogshit. You'll know because the trick has a silver inner portion that looks like a Glock trigger. 24oz trigger pull master race.

I also would say .308 is probably a better choice because there are a metric fuckton of ammo types and it's easier to find short-action rifles for cheap.

Get a knife that you can grip extremely well, nothing is worse than losing a razor sharp knife in the guts of a deer in the dark. All it takes is going slow, and cutting as little as possible.

Savage Axis in .308 win. It's pretty much the best bolt action for the price. Walmart has them for $277. Spend the rest of your budget a 1-4x30 scope (no need for a fuckhuge one, you'll probably be taking shots within 100 yards)

The .243 shoots really flat, and has dropped almost all deer I've shot right where they stood. I use 100 grain for deer, and ~60 for varmints. It'a got plenty of knockdown for deer. 30-30 is my second choice when I use iron sights, while tracking etc, especially after shooting a bear with a bow. I like 30-06 more since its plentiful in my area, you can find good used ones for ~300 with scope.

Howa's gameking 1500 in .308 is really nice, and comes with a really nice scope + another floor plate that can accept detachable mags.
It's like 650 from Big-5.
It's part for part interchangeable with some really high quality rifle I forget the name of because Howa makes them, and parts for Remington 700's and all that.

Don't hunt from a stand if you don't have to, or aren't a beginner. Hunting on a stand over bait is a great way to harvest deer for management purposes, but if you want to have fun while hunting, I think it's far better to stalk hunt. Really puts your skills to the test.
