That being said, I also prefer the sawyer because it uses similar technology but the design is more versatile. It can be screwed on to a plastic soda bottle or it can be fitted in-line with a water bladder.
The lifestraw, IMO, is more of an "emergency kit" design than an "everyday use" design.
Neither the lifestraw nor the sawyer will eliminate viruses, but viruses are mostly a concern when you're around populations of humans and animals. In that case you would want to boil, chemically treat or UV treat your water.
You can UV treat your water with an electronic device or, if you're not in a rush, you can do much the same by putting your water in a clear container and leaving it in the sun for a while.
