First look around and survey your surroundings.
Find shade.
Determine lowest points and points with plant life that doesn't look dried out. Potential sources of water. See if you notice dried river beds. Again, with digging, water AND MUD( ultimate building material in dry desert)
During looky loo, any animals? Trees? Cacti? Shrubs? Or just sand.MUD. Etc.
Shade is almost always first goal because it reduces loss of moisture, protects from burning sun(literally), and sometimes leads to moisture sources. Also FOOD. Snakes and lizards, bugs and coyotes STAY in the shade to cool off.
