Hey /out/. So I have a question, I have some agricultural land that I have bought for farming but I am wondering if I am able to have temporary structures on my land such as tents etc.

I just know here in Germany it's a local thing and depends on the very "land plan" for that area, don't know if that's also more centrally regulated in France as many other things are.
You probably best go to your local city/village council/administration responsible for that patch of land and ask there

What kind of shitty legal system requires special permission to build something outside of rigid guidelines on your property?

Is France still under Napoleonic Law, or was that ended with the revolution?

I'm just thinking that the closest relation that I have to that legal system is Louisiana, which, from my viewpoint, is totally ridiculous. I almost want to stay the hell away from there because I'm worried about getting jailed for doing something I didn't know was illegal. It's a misdemeanor to not show an officer identification when lawfully asked over there. How fucked up is that? What if your wallet just got stolen? What if you're 17 and don't have a driver's license?

If you don't have identification, I don't see how you could be arrested for not handing it over. Is it all the time or just for traffic stops? That sounds pretty bad anyway.

Yes you can pitch a tent, build a shed or a cabin, or park a trailer.
Gypsies often buy agricultural land because it's cheaper than building land and build a shed where they put their washing machine, oven, sink...etc.
When in doubt, ask the city hall or check legifrance (hosts all French legal texts)

Owning land doesn't allow you to do whatever you want with it.
According to French regulations :

-farmland : for farming, pasture on, fishing, hunting, camping.
-building land : for building, providing that you comply with floor area ratio, maximum building height...etc.
Some villages have special regulations to protect architectural heritage and determine buildings architecture, windows and shutters shape and color...etc.

French legal system is based on Roman Law but yeah, many things changed after the French Revolution.

I guess all the rules on maintaining certain building patterns makes sense because of the specific cultural heritage of the country, and often in the U.S. builders will combine different periods of design to make horrible, garish buildings, but it's fucked up that you can't build a house on your farmland, or some kind of processing plant for your crops. On the family apple orchard, we had a cider press right in the orchard.
