Hey /out/, I asked on /trv/ but they weren't too helpful

Do any of you have experience getting back into America as an American citizen without a passport? I'd be travelling by land from Canada. I can provide driver's license, birth certificate, student ID, and SS card. I've read online that they'll just hassle you a bit then let you through, but I want a little bit more reassurance. Anyone have a similar experience?

Thought I renewed it, didn't
I had a passport when I was a minor, but I lost the physical copy and just forgot to renew it

You don't need a passport to get into Canada, but you need one to get back
I got across with birth certificate etc listed in first post but I'm fairly spooked now that I found out you need a passport to get back

I don't have time to wait in Canada for a new passport because school will be starting soon

Have any of you guys actually tried and been turned away? Or are you just reading it online? ALL the stories I've read of people that have actually tried crossing have been able to if they could provide enough ID like I listed above

Didn't even need no steekin birth certificate. I went through the border several times in Buffalo/Niagara and I'm a Kiwi. Never even got asked.

border patrol cops are normally pretty lax if you are white and aren't sweating bullets. i've been stopped on i10 at on of the interior checkpoints stinking of weed in the middle of the night in a car with maine plates, and they just talked to us and let us go. pretty much everytime i come back from mexico i bring back too much booze and they don't care. when they do say anything i just act dumb.

i've had a passport since i was young, so i'm not certain, but i would bet as long as your white and don't act like an ass or like you got a pound of heroin in your ass, they will probably let you through. just explain the situation to them like you did to us if they ask.

give it a try OP. worst thing they can gonna do is turn you around and make you go to a consulate.

Depends where you're crossing really. I live in vermont and some towns on the border have sidewalks that just continue into Canada from the us without and border patrol or anything
