How do you feel about moccasins /out/?
If the native Americans used them I'm sure they can do the job of protecting your feet in the outdoors for extended periods of time. If so, kinda makes me rethink alot of outdoor footwear, maybe alot of it's unnecessary.

But then again maybe they suck, I don't know. Anybody have any personal experience with them outdoors?

Of course you don't need shoes, people have been running around much faster and longer without them than the average person today. Same with moccasins.
But realize that all these indians and aborigines were much tougher physically and also mentally, dealing with pain, than we are today. Compared to them we are basically cripples.
Go ahead, run around in moccasins for a few years, you'll build the needed muscles and get tougher, but it'll take time until you actually feel equally secure as in normal boots.

the old ways aren't always better. sometimes progress is good because we actually made improvements and new things are better

Put on some good boots unless you really wanna be a hippie. Moccasins aren't practical which is usually what /out/ is all for.

You could just go outdoors butt naked and survive off the land but that's not fun. There's a certain challenge to being an outdoorsman already. Why revert back to 1000 year old technology when we have our own moccasins.

I'm more or less with you on that. I mean, sometime the native traditional shit is just the best but god dam, often there's just too much romanticisation of this stuff bleeding into debates on how good the stuff actually is.

I've got a pair of moccasins that I hike in sometimes. They're pretty comfortable once you get used to it. They do beat up your feet on rocks and such. Traction is surprisingly good with a leather sole -- there's usually no problem scrambling, although I wouldn't recommend it on wet rocks. A pair of Moabs is definitely more breathable and probably lighter. All in all, I like them.

Comfortable camp shoes. Not suited to hiking.

1) Soft soles
Natives used to watch where they stepped. They avoided dry branches, sharp rocks, and slippery leaves. Their world wasn't paved.

2) Natural materials
Great for repairs on the go, sustainability, and a folksy look. But a bad compromise when it comes to weight, water resistance, ventilation, or warmth. They take forever to dry and require a lot of maintenance. And the natural materials needed to repair them are harder to get and much more expensive than modern materials in our modern world.

3) General safety
Soles aside, an /out/ shoe should be a sturdy boot that sits securely even in sudden unexpected conditions, that protects your mobility, and that will not fail easily. Without shoes you are crippled in many environments. Moccasins just don't have that reliability.

I enjoy a bit of reenactment and face these issues with virtually all historical footwear. Most ancient shoes were made for one terrain and one climate, with severe limitations on their usefulness beyond that envelope, and with great maintenance requirements. Old shoes are shit. And today they're also expensive.

A $20 pair of Walmart boots will outperform any historical footwear. And a well made modern boot will last you a lifetime if cared for a little.

So unless you're reenacting, performing experimental archaeology, or getting in touch with your ancestors, get quality shoes!

Apparently one of the few concessions to modern life allowed at the Guedelon Castle contruction site, where they eat, sleep, and work period accurately, is modern safety boots and gloves for the masons and carpenters.

I wear dark ages turnshoes (european moccasins) and I have worn moccasins.

They get wet easily, so you have to not step in puddles or wet long grass and wear thick wool socks so your feet don't get cold.

They are good for hunting since you can feel the earth and you are silent and the shoes I have have got pretty thick soles (so i can walk over thorns, jagged rocks, etc without any worry).

They're much lighter.

I prefer them to heavy boots and would wear them anytime but you need to prepare your feet for them. If it's your first time wearing them and you try to climb mountains then your feet will be sore.
