if you look into various amazon documentaries you'll see that the places the tribes make their villages are mosquito-free! i know it sounds implausible but i was recently watching one where a western doctor visits the tribes occasionally to help them with illness and disease and one of the things he keeps an eye out for is whether they have mosquitoes, because usually when mozzies move-in various diseases do too. not all of the diseases are directly from mosquitoes either, it's just that their presence means the ecosystem has changed (due to fire, flood, deforestation, etc) and that brings many plagues besides just mosquitoes. they set-up in locations far away from stagnant water, they clear a lot of the underbrush, and they also have smokey fires going for various reasons at all times. it's kind of fascinating actually.
