I prefer warm climates, a decent amount of rainfall, green landscapes with both pastures and forests, with some lakes and mountains thrown in for good measure. I like having some decent sized population centers around but also like large stretches of rural area with low population in between those population centers. Somewhere in Tennessee or Kentucky would be my ideal I think.

California is awesome. In SoCal you have a mediterranean style coast with a desert inland. CenCal has a majestic rocky coastline with swampy deltas and grasslands inland, oak covered foothills and pine covered mountains. NorCal has a wet redwood covered coast and grassy inland. So many different landscapes and climates for one state, all of which are great for any outdoor activity you can think of.

I was reading the account Francisco Vázquez de Coronado going into Kansas in the 1500's. He said the land was so flat that all you could see for miles were fields. Also when men would go off into the area to hunt for food, many would just disappear into the high grass.

They would even play the horn/bugle and could hear the guys respond but could never see them. But it wasn't because of trees...

Biased aside, Kentucky is a very rural area with lots of outdoor activities.

Fishing and hunting are some of the best in the states. Kentucky has the highest population of turkey/deer per square mile.

Numerous trails to hike on. Numerous camping grounds. Lots of natural viewing scenes such as Cumberland Falls.

The only thing that sucks is if you're looking for fun like out on the town, you will be disappointed. Kentucky essentially has 2 cities. Lexington (more of a midwest feel) and Louisville (a nigger feel). Depending on where you are in the state, the closest one of them could be 1 to 2 hours away. So if you got a whiny girlfriend that wants to shop or go out to the city, you're kinda fucked.

I like Ohio because I was born there but god damn can it be annoying at times especially with the weather. You might get a week of sun or a week of rain, nobody knows. Trails that you were just walking in during spring can practically disappear in summer if it's not a heavily trafficked area because there's so much growth.
