What works for me in the forests of the Northeast does not always work for someone in South Florida swampland, or the drier Southwest.

Hard to go wrong with outdoor gear. Some works, some does not. If you go out twicw a yesr for a day hike and buy a $350 backpack, you're probably doing it wrong. If you're thru hiking the AT and buy a $15 walmart backpack, you're probably doing it wrong as well.

Buy what fits your needs.

Grab a used toughbook off ebay if you really want a "rugged laptop". I don't know why you'd want to do that though, it'd probably be better to just get a 10"-12" laptop and keep it in your pack protected from impacts and the elements.

Or, get a tablet with a lifeproof case or otterbox or something.

Most sensitive item in a laptop is the hard drive. Replace it with an SSD, and you've just made it much more "rugged". And faster.

Since you're replacing the spinning disk with a faster SSD, you can probably get away with a cheaper computer at that point too.

Even a traditional laptop with a regular spinning disk in it is fine if you take care of it... don't drop/throw it, pack it on your back instead of on your bike... padded cases help a lot...

My wife wore out the corners (where the frame meets the fabric) on her Osprey, took her 4 years to do it. It still worked fine but she sent it to Osprey anyways and they fixed it up and even reinforced the corners so it's tougher than before.

I don't have any experience with mil stuff but I do expect to have our Ospreys for life.

I think there's way too much in the civilian market to say that.

From backpacks to watches, axes and knives there's many companies offering no hassle lifetime warranties.

My sister wore through her expensive rain jacket in one season though so I get what you're saying.

Goretex isn't a specific fabric, it's just the membrane (and the company guaranteeing it). There's durable Goretex and there's lightweight Goretex. The military does use Goretex, after all. You just have to shop for what you need.
